Hi,

I'm thinking about getting an ERGO for when we go hiking later in the year. But, my DS is 18 months old already and weighs 12.5kg. I don't know how much he'll weigh in a few months, but maybe 13.5kg. We hired a hiking backpack last year but it put a lot of stress on my dh's shoulders and he has an old AC ligament injury so he could only carry our DS for one day. Do you think the ERGO might be better? Or is it pushing it with his age & weight?

Thanks!

My 3yo will still hop in it occassionally either hip or back position, shes 18kgs :) you will get at least 12 months out of it, maybe longer depeding on bubs as most is tend to hover around a certain weight range around the age of 2-3, well mine have anyway

best investment ever, plus you can use it if you have anymore kids or you would get your money back if you sold it :)

My 14 month old ds is almost 13kg, and i hardly notice carrying him in the Ergo on my back. On the front it tends to pull my shoulder forward and can be uncomfortable for a long trip, but with him in the back it's a breeze. They recommend up to about 20kg, but are stress tested up to 45kg, so i'll be carrying ds in it for a while yet!

In short, the ERGO will carry your child for as long as YOU are happy to carry them! On the ERGO webiste, on the FAQs page, there is a photo of a fully grown woman being carried in the ERGO!!

I still carry my 4 yr old now and then if we have had a long beach walk and she wants a bit of a break - its like a piggy back with no hands!

The best thing is that when you are not using it and your older child is happy to walk, you can just wrap the ERGO up and stick it in your backpack!

BTW - i just checked and they are still 20% OFF at Babes in Arms website - indigo colour only! :goodvibes:

I carry my 12.5kg toddler in mine with no worries - a friend comfortably carries her 25kg niece!

I love my Ergo - worth every cent

I have no issues with carrying my 15 month old girl in my ergo on my back and shes hovering around 12kg havent checked in a while. Im pretty sure the tag states up to about 40Lbs which is about 23-25kg. By about the age where your kid is reaching the limit on the weight capacity for ther ergo your kid will prob most likely be wanting to walk around anyways but still great that u can relieve them sometimes if you need to and that could be handy. Been using ours since 5 months old and everyone comments on it every day. Totally machine washable and you can clean them with a lint remover too. Hubby uses it on occasions very usisex style. Just got another one for my sis who is expecting her 3rd baby shes never used a carrier before but Im sure she will love it! Comes with a step by step DVD. Pretty funny actually when you see the guy doing martial arts in it he he. I had to buy her one as I didnt want to part with mine!! Once my girl gets too heavy (when I fall preggas) I might get a small unbrella stroller. PS on the site I think they say that to hold bubs in the front position is up to about 5 months but occasionally I still pop my girl on the front...just for the extra cuddles! Her head does stick up above my face in that position though a bit but most of the time its fine I still see where Im going.
With her on my back I can do anything even at her weight and shes a big tall girl. I can carry two huge shopping bags full of groceries handbag etc. Easier to carry a shopping basket with girl on back too as I have more space in front of me to get my change/purse and to handle things that Im buying.
I dont feel a thing with my girl in it and dont have to worry about lugging a huge pram in the car just chuck the ergo in the back seat and off we go. You wont regret buying one trust us!

PS u just need to watch out that you dont hang around signs or delicate things that could break with them on your back (you'll quickly be aware of this!!) as they have a tenancy to knock things down behind your back.

Jedd is 11kg and I'm 5mths pregnant and still able to backpack him - I love it!

I would definitely recommend it. Otherwise, maybe another hubber could loan you theirs for a week or two so you can try it out. I would be happy to part with mine for a couple of weeks in September if you want to borrow it :) Just need it til hubby gets home (it keeps me sane at night when getting dinner prepared!)

I just thought of something funny...DH mentioned the other day that putting a child on the back in an ergo would distribute the weight around evenly while pregnant!! Couldnt help myself:laughing:

Thanks for your comments. I think I will buy one, although thanks to milkontap for your offer of borrowing one, but i suspect I might use it more than I imagined.

So, firstly we'll get the bills out of the way from the renovations, then it's ergo shopping time! :)
