View Full Version : 6 month old hates tummytime
Hi all
My son is 6 months old and hates tummy time. He pushs himself up for a couple of minutes and then buries hes head in the floor and starts getting fustrated and cries. He is also not turning on to his back.
Any suggestions?

hi michelle,
there isnt much that you can do but be persistant... have you tried having lots of toys around him?
do you pick him up straight away?
my son hated tummy time for ages... but now he crawls everywhere and plays on his tummy all the time, he is 8.5mths old....
:D

My 8 month old hated it as well until he was about 4 months and realised he could put his head on the side and rest when he got tired. Being on his stomach may be getting him a little bit anxious because he may not feel strong enough or he may feel stuck or pinned down.
I'll pass on some advice a midwife gave me... When he's on the floor, gently roll him from back to front and back again (with his arms) while cooing and singing to him. He will learn the actions he is supposed to use to roll and he will also associate positive playtime with these actions.
He'll get used to it soon and will learn to love it!

My little girl hated tummy time right from the start. Whenever we put her on her tummy she would scream until we picked her up. Loved laying on her back though. Once she learnt to roll over, as soon as i put her on her tummy she would instantly roll onto her back.
In the end I just accepted that she didn't like it and assumed that she would be a bum shuffler instead of a crawler.
At around 8 1/2 months she just started crawling (normally) at full speed which took us a bit by surprise. We were expecting her to be a late crawler because she had no tummy time as a baby. Now there is no stopping her.

Have you tried a mirror in front of her? There are specific mirrors you can buy for bub, or you can get a non-breakable mirror from the hardware store and prop it up. My 1.5 yr old still loves watching herself.
My son hated tummy time so much that in the end i stopped doing it.
By 7 months he was rolling (very late i felt)
by 8 months crawling (normal style)
by 11 months walking
now 14 months and we cant stop him
so my advise is this....
Dont worry about it
Take care

hi there,
thanks for this post put my mind at ease, my son is 5 months and hates tummy time, like the other bubs will lay for a few seconds then just gets frustrated and cries, he also hasn't rolled over yet. i think he can do it cause he has lifted his legs up and dropped to the side but he really doesn't find it interesting at all. he loves sitting up and standing on me, my theory was he just wanted to be up and looking rather than having to lay down.
hopefully he will progress as normal like your bubs
peace
