I am yet to have my appointment about it but ds will need an aide at school next year. His going through a few things at the moment to help him prepare (his repeating kinder for this reason) and so far things are looking good, his improving and its all having a positive affect but he will still need some help with his short term memory loss and fine motor skills until they retrain his brain (apparently this is what they are aiming for and eventually it will happen, how long is another matter)

I know this is probably a really sily question but what if he suddenly comes leaps and bounds and doesnt need one when school starts (wishful thinking) what happens to the aide, i mean i would feel horrible if i had lined it all up and then had to say no your not needed i guess.

When i spoke to the guy from school organising it she said regardless they will have one first term and then play it by ear but from his view he will need one for the whole year and maybe part time afterwards, just from his reports and his current needs.

If someones been in this situation or if someone is an aide and can share their thoughts i would appreciate it, thank you :)

The intergration/temporary aides and hours tend to be on a per hour/per term basis. So your boy may get, say, 6 hours a week or something of aide time and this is always offered first to the perm aides, before going to offer/advertised.

As they're on a per term basis, if a contract is signed already for, say, those 6 hours.. then those 6 hours will be available to the school/aide for that term... so if he's all good and there's no aide needed, however a contract has already been signed, you're not going to make them go hungry. :p

(at least this is how it goes in QLD. :))

ETA: If they do put an aide on for the whole year just for him, don't fret, if he doesn't need her/him someone else in the classroom will have their hand up and need help at those times :p

Hi Punkbaby,
My son has an aide.
I was thinking the same thing as you what happens if he doesnt need the aide etc.
Well as you have been adviced they will put the aide in place for the first term then if they think your boy no longer needs the aide they will gradually reduce the time they spend with him down to nothing, well this is what they have told me anyway.
The aide my son has tries to work with all the kids in the class aswell and get to know them so my son doesnt look the odd one out.
Feel free to message me if you need to.Sounds like your boy and mine have been through alot of the same things :flowerz:

yup- the role would be contracted out .. so the aide would know that the job was only there for SURE for one term/ one semester (whatever the school decided) ..

as seek said - if your son DOESN"T need the aide?? and the school has the funding .. someone will need/ use the support :) it certainly wont be wasted ..

Thankyou :) I guess i am thinking too positive, i know he will need it but i have been giving myself some hope that he wont.

Good to see that it wont be wasted though if he doesnt need it as much as they request thanks for your help
