View Full Version : Some kind of leak!

Hi all, just wondering if anyone may be able to help here...
I'm almost 36 weeks and 2 days ago I woke up saturated (as if waters of some kind had broken). It wasn't urine as it was clear and didn't smell at all. I had completely emptied my bladder 50 minutes beforehand and gone back to sleep, then woke up to this!
I called the Hospital, went in and they checked everything out and said the baby was fine and my membranes were still in tact!!?? I joked with the midwife and said I would feel like such an idiot if I had just weed myself in my sleep (but I ALWAYS wake myself up!!). She told me it was not amniotic fluid but at this point in pregnancy it's possible to have a clear liquid/fluid discharge. (I already have this, but this was like a glass of water in volume!)
Does anyone know how it is physically possible to gush liquid but have no tear in the sac? I am really confused now!
Hi Jo,
I've never had that amount of liquid but at 39 weeks I have been having a lot of clear, watery discharge for the past several weeks. At first I was worried it was amniotic fluid, then I worried I'd completely lost control of my bladder but we just discussed this very thing in the "Due in May" thread and it seems we are all experiencing the same thing. It's apparently quite common in late pregnancy, so as long as the doc says not to worry I wouldn't worry. :)

Hi Josiebean
Sounds very much like what I had with my first pregnancy - a hind water leak. I woke up in the wee (pardon the pun) hours feeling like I had wet myself. Phoned the hospital and they told me to come in. They used an 'amnicator'. This is a long, orange coloured cotton bud that changes in colour to navy blue if it comes in contact with alkaline fluid, such as amniotic fluid (like a pH indicator).
But if they sent you away then maybe you are just peeing yourself in your sleep!
A hind water leak is where a small hole opens in the sac, usually up behind the baby's head, closer to the baby's body. Hind water leaks can continue as a slow dribble or leak, or can stop after a short while. The fluid can stop coming away because the two layers of membrane (in the sac) are able to 'slip' back over each other, to reseal the hole. This is why some woman will notice a dribble of fluid, and then getting nothing more for several days until the fore-waters (or the part of the sac in front of the baby's head) break with a gush.

Hi Cosmic and Supermum,
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.
I'm only new here, so I'll check out the "due in May" thread also.
At least it's some comfort knowing others have experienced this! Let's hope the bub can hold off a few more weeks...
Thanks again :)
dont want to scare you but i had leakage too at the end of preg number 1. it felt like a period but was clear. i went to the hospital and they examined me twice and said my cervix was intact so it was prob just wee. the second time i went in they agreed to keep me in as it was getting worse. i was given pads to wear and the midwifes had to smell it (the joys of pregnancy) and they said it was my waters (has a distinct smell apparently. the doc refused to believe the mid/w putting off my induction for 2 days saying i was still wetting myself. by the time d/s was delivered by emergency c/s i was completely dry which caused problems for ds. so if it feels like periods. ie gets worse when you stand up etc insist they look into it further. good luck:hugs:

I had this with my pregnancy and the hospital sent me home as well. That was on a Saturday and on the Wednesday I had a major gush which we took to be waters breaking.
The Dr assumed hindwaters and I went to hospital again, was 3 cms dilated and my forewaters were then broken. After delivery my OB said that my hindwaters were completely intact so he had no idea where the other two leaks came from, unless it was urine instead of amniotic fluid.
Trust me, it was amniotic fluid - we just don't know where it came from !

Is your bed a water bed?
Sounds silly asking this but my dad thought he had an incontinence problem and got all these tests done and everything (he is 47) and the doctor couldn't work out what was going on. Each night dad would wake up wet "down there".
It was later discovered that there was a leak in the water bed around his "down there" area and each time he leant on the bed it would leak, making him think he did wee or something!!
He copped it big time! :)

had the same thing.... Doc told me fluid can trap in the ripples in your vagina (on the inside up high somewhere??) believe me if your waters are breaking you will know it is your waters.... once my waters did break I felt silly ever going to the doctor for the gush of fluid I had cause it was nothing like my waters breaking....
Hope all goes well for you...

:hugs:
Thanks for all of the advice and replies, I feel much better to know this isn't just me and made to feel like I wet myself. I know what urine smells like - and this definitely was not urine! I even made my poor DH smell just for a second opinion !
28 days and counting...!:smiliedance:
