I have a baby boy of 5 weeks and are having problems with a red raw bum.:( I have tried every cream on the market from sudocrem to bepanthen to daktozin to covitol and some more. It is so bad that it started bleeding today. Been down to the doc to get him checked out. He thinks he might be lactose intolerant and causes the raw bum. Poor little possum. Does anybody out there have any idea on how to clear up his bum, cause I really don't know what to do anymore. Nothing seems to work for me.

Use cornflour (the stuff you have in the pantry) on his bottom - will help to heal it. But, you will need to work out what is giving him the rash (nappies and wipes could be a good place to start, what you are bathing him in and what you are eating could also be things to look at)....

Try cornflour, but if it started bleeding it sounds really bad. Give as much nappy free time as possible. Are you formula feeding? If you're formula feeding, can you try a lactose free one? If you're breastfeeding, can you try drinking lactose free milk or cutting down/out dairy in your diet? Just a few suggestions, hope you find something that helps :( it's horrible to see our little ones sick or in pain and not know what to do :crying:

i know its cold but if you can give boy some nappy free time it helps. Like the PP said see if you can work out if its the nappies or wipes, if you're using cloth could it be the detergent you use. There could be all sorts of reasons he's getting this. I hope it gets better soon.

Hydrozole Cream, with a thick layer of sudocream or paw paw over the top. Try stop his poo touching his skin, even though the zinc will stop it if you notice his going to go take his nappy off, the less contact the better. Lots of nappy free time too.

Wipes are shocking for nappy rash, each nappy change i would get a luke warm bowl of water and bath his bum with cotton wool. Let it air dry, bath his bum this way for both wet and soiled nappies.

Check with your chemist though regarding the Hydrozole Cream, i know i was told it was ok to use wih broken skin but its best to ask.

I would think that your gp should have given you advice regarding being lactose intollerant so i would be going back and asking him what he recommends you use. Good luck

okay...

1. stop using wipes.
- when you change him, have a little tub of warm water with chamomile tea in it that you can just wash his little bum in.

2. let him air dry as much as possible... if you can heat the room and lay him on a couple of towels so he can go nappy free... and when it warms up outside, place him on a rug in the fresh air, with some filtered sunlight.

3. Use cornflour on his bottom. It doesn't block the pores and will keep his skin dry. DO NOT USE A POWDER WITH TALC.

4. Brauers Nappy Rash cream is very good, very light and non-greasy. I like this, and once it's absorbed I use Lucas Paw Paw ointment.

5. Avoid disposables if you can, they trap heat and make rashes worse as the air can't circulate. If he HAS to wear a nappy, try to use a good old terry towelling one, folded so that there is only 1 or 2 layers at the back to allow for maximum airflow, change every 30-45 mins, and sprinkle bottom with cornflour.

This should clear it up in a day or two.

Oh and don't use any soap in his baths. If this doesn't look like it's improving, then I'd definitely be taking him back to the GP.

I agree with OJ & Me, If you must dry his bum pat, don't rub.

I swear by bicarb in the bath water. It soothes and aids healing other than that I find paw paw cream is great (I even did this to heal a large burn injury on myself so I know it doesn't sting)

Worst case I find daktozin can help give the extra omph

hey there

we use a cream called conveen cream for Mikis butt when it gets like that its a slot thicker then other nappy pastes, its actualy used as around stomas to stop fecal burning it works really well

Also like the others have said not to rub dry just pat dry

also my DDs but has really improved since useing wool covers over her nappies at night rather then disposables or nappies with PUL in them as its alows it to breath

DD's just had a really bad rash that took a few weeks to clear up.

I used the Brauer nappy rash cream, then put Herron zinc & castor oil barrier cream over that, then Gaia baby powder on top.

We wash her with the Gaia baby wash & also made up a wipes solution of the baby wash & warm water, which I changed each day. For wipes I just use flannel squares, they're nice & soft.

We used the hair dryer on cool setting to dry her bottom when the rash was really bad.

During the day we only used terry flat nappies with no cover as we could easily see & feel when she was wet, then her sandman or BBH nappies for night with a knitted soaker and microfleece liners to keep her bottom dry. We also used the knitted soaker over the terry flats when we went out as it's more breathable that PUL cover

I had tried everything the chemist gave us but it just made her worse

We use Conveen too. We buy it online cos can't get it from pharmacy. It's a cream they use in Hospitals for incontinent adults (eeewww) but it really works for when the redness won't heal. It helps to get bum back to perfect and then we use a regular barrier cream (castor and zinc). My favorite of these is Curash. Hope this helps!

Pawpaw ointment is brilliant, I can almost see DS's face visibly relax when I apply it to a bad nappy rash- in addition to many of the PP suggestions specially nappy free time and pat bum, don't rub.

Poor little tyke- isn't it horrible!

i would have to say cornflour is the best thing i found that worked. we used the expensive creams and doctor prescribed stuff but it never worked. as soon as we came across the cornflour his bum was so pretty again. went back to being a lovely colour instead of red

Wash his bum really well with plain warm water. Dont add anything to the water.

Pat dry then use LOTS of cornflour on him. After the cornflour/curash smear on the nappy cream.

When you change his nappy you dont have to wipe off ALL the cream/powder. Just wipe off what you have to in order to clean off the poo. then sprinkle more powder on and more cream.

One thing I was thinking, he could be having a reaction to the nappies too. Have you tried changing brands of nappies? If he's in disposables it might be good to change brands and if in cloth maybe look at what they are being washed with.
