For Melb mums.......

Wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a good place to get good quality, CHEAP fruit and veg?????
All these years I have stupidly been buying my fruit ang veg at the supermarket. It is just getting to expensive. I'm imagining markets are the go, but I have no idea where to go other than the queen vic.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I'd be interested in hearing about somewhere to get meat and chicken cheap too!

I go to the Vic Market. The Prestom Market is good if you are in the northern suburbs.

There is a wholesale butcher in Campbellfield called PJ Meats. They also sell to the general public. You can either drive out there once/twice a week, but I used to ring my order through (I lived the other side of town) and then they would deliver the meat straight to my door on their next delivery run (didn't charge any extra).
I would order chicken fillets and ask them to butterfly them for me. The fillets would come butterflied (with the skins in a seperate bag for the doggie) and they wouldn't charge any extra. They have really good quality meat...here's their website...PJ meats (http://www.pjmeats.com.au/index.htm)
It's worth a trip out there to see their range before ordering over the phone.

Jem, there are a number good fruit and veg shops on the main street (Oxford st?) in Fairfield. They may not be cheaper than the supermarket but much better quality, so I find if I buy something it doesn't go bad in the fridge after only a few days like some supermarket stuff and so I have less wasted money.

I second, third and fourth the Vic Market - it's great! Takes us a long time 'cos we comparison shop all the stalls (you really DON'T have to do that though!) for fruit and veg and meat. I tried Preston once - didn't think it was as good for either choice or cost.

If you go lateish Saturdays (2-ish or so) you can get particularly good deals for meat as they try to get rid of everything before the 3:00 close

At Safeway chicken is always cheaper in the deli - have you noticed?

Also, fish (from the deli) is generally cheaper than meat these days too... Perch is pretty yum...

I cook up 'asian greens' for dh & I - they're pretty cheap, otherwise frozen veg...

Bananas - $9.98 kg - used to be a staple food....

Why is the government sending money overseas when we can't afford to feed our own families???:banghead:

With the price of petrol going up and up.... we are only going to be paying more in the stores....
I have found Aldi quite good...
I shop there first and then go to Coles/Bilo for what I cannot get at Aldi.
The fruit and vegie shop near me is quite expensive.... I find the supermarkets cheaper...
I have not gone to the markets to buy my fruit and vegies as I like to buy them on a daily basis and I tend to be working on the days they are trading.

Theres a couple of cheap fruit and vege shops in Carnegie on the main street - I always manage to get double what I would at the supermarket - for half the price.
I spend around $15-$20 for three/four bags of produce.

Footscray market  I always go there for pork, chicken, fruit and veg, and pick up beef and fish too. A great selection of standard and exotic fruit and veg, and "Little Saigon" is just up the road with a ginormous (sp?) range of fruit/veg, some of it I have never encountered before... anyone for Mangoteens? Yum!
