Just a Q on if 5 months is early to be sitting unsupported.

Ejs been doing this now for a week or so (does topple sidewards sometimes if over reaches for a toy etc but shes getting better at stopping herself now) but I notice the other babies at mothers group similar ages as yet cant do it.

So am just wondering if she's early at being able to do this?

I think it is a littel early. My ds was sitting at 5 months too, but none of the other bubs in our mums groop sat till much later. I think the 'average' is about 6 months, or at least that's what you seem to read everywhere!

My DD also sat up unsupported from 5mths, but like Jem, most of the bubs in my mums group didn't do this til they were 6mths. In fact there are two bubs (8mths, 7mths - both boys incidentally) who still need support to sit, have only started rolling and aren't even near crawling. Each baby is different and reaches milestones in their own time!!

Its amazing the different stages all babes develop.

My first Ds didnt roll till 6 months, crawl till almost 10 months, didnt sit unaided until about 8 months and yet walked by 11 months !!
He was the last to do everything in our mums group but the first to walk!!

With my DS#2 i am not even paying any attention to these "milestones".
So much pressure is put on us to make sure our bubs are doing "what they are meant to do" by certain ages, its all so frustrating and terribly stressful in some cases. I think once you have had one baby and seen how development happens naturally you dont worry so much with your other kids....

I agree. I think it is really quite silly. I don't get into the competitive "my baby was walking at three minutes old and eating a five course meal 5 seconds after she was crowning" bollocks! :D .
As a general rule, I think 6 months is around about average for babies to start sitting, but that average has a pretty broad spectrum. My nephew wasn't sitting until he was 11 months and my baby has been sitting unaided since 5 months. My middle three were all 7 months and my first was 5 months. They are all so different - same with walking, crawling, cutting teeth....they do it when they are ready. :)

my dd was sitting by 31/2 months, crawling by 4 and is almost walking at 8 months.
but she still doesn't have a single tooth.

every baby is as different as they can be. as long as they are healthy i say don't worry.

My bub was sitting unsupported by about 4 1/2 months & now at 6 months can turn & reach for things while sitting & never topples over. She can also lean right forward to reach something, then sit herself back upright.

She is just now starting to crawl. (OMG! My house is sooooo... not ready!!)

Raleigh first started sitting around the 5 1/2 month mark. I just left her to it :) I figured she's ready when she wants to be. She started crawling around 7months but didn't start walking properly until just after her first birthday. I guess they're ready when they're ready :)

My DD1 didn't sit up on her own until after she could walk (9 months) but DD2 sat on her own from a bit past 5 months.
