View Full Version : what was your main reason for using cloth
Hey guys
was just wondering waht everyones MAIN reason was for useing cloth
I know there are many good things about cloth nappies, but i curiuos what brought you over to the dark side lol
I will start it was totaly a the way they look thing, I know totaly vein but i think they are really cute
There are other things i like about cloth to better for the heiny, save money, beter for envioronment but I have to admit if they didnt look cute i wouldnt be useing them
So what was your MAIN motivation for cloth
Be honest now lol
I had been buying disposables for 3 years and I was over it lol. I made the switch for DS3(because I had no idea about MCN before then) because I wanted to save money.

honestly...........
the MAIN reason..........
they are cute :o
environment! :flowerz:
i hate creating rubbish. we recycle and compost so our waste is very little (less than a bag a week). the thought of contributing a tonne of nappies to landfill makes me sick...

i dont know,,,,i just did....i was bought up in a cloth environment so it seemed natural to me to do the same. Now though my thoughts are the same but the cute factor, the costs and the environent play a big part. Ohh and there is something about a cloth bum....i would rather cloth on my bum rather than plastic if i was a baby
i am so glad i found mcn's, i love my flats but mcns are the best

with DD1 it just didn't occur to me to use anything else.
DS - I had bought the cloth(terry flats ) , but ended needing a cs. they gave us disposables to use in hospital, and I had a whole heap of samples at home. I just never got around to the cloth
DD2 I just used disposables because it seemed easier. I always hated spending the money though. I was intrigued by mcn and had some given to me. I was totally hooked!
I love not spending money on disposables, I love that they are so cute!

My baby's potential to have sensitive skin
what got me looking in to cloth is my hubby has sensitive skin and after looking in the bounty bag and seeing this new kind of cloth had me interested. i showed my MIL and she was very impressed that i was talking cloth and when she seen how they are now she was like they are so cool.
after reading lots of information i didn't want to risk my baby's skin, to everything that is in disposables...so that was my main reason.
then comes finding out the bonus information, better for the pocket ~ that sold my hubby on them. and for all the other reasons, we ended up doing lots of reading and decided that mcn were for us.
To be very honest, it was the cute factor :o. I also love the environmental and cost benefits.
Can't wait til summer to show her nappies off again.

My Reasons
1.We all have sensitive skin and bubs has already got eczema so i was trying to do the best thing for his skin.
2.there so cute
3. i needed a hobby.... hubby spends a fortune on PS3 and xbox games and i needed something for me, so i make my own
4. so i could save money i always joke my breastfed cloth bummed baby costs me nothing ( except the constant fluffy mail i order, even when i really dont need more nappies)
lots of great reasons

The main reason that started me looking - was that huggies had just bought out their 'new improved nappies' They rode up DD's bum crack, giving her a massive wedgie, and left red welts on her legs - so in a thread complaining about it, a lovely clothie suggested i check out the cloth threads.....well I was amazed - they were cute, easy, cheap, (compared to disposables), cute, better on the environment, and did I mention cute??
LOL. So huggies stuff-up started me looking, and the monetary thing kept me looking, closely followed by the environmental issue.

And I luff her for it
I really dislike the 'throw away/consumerism' attitude that seems so common.
I think the question should be "why wouldn't you use cloth"!:D

You guys on bubhub made me do it!!! When I started looking at the websites I couldnt get over how cute they looked , how easy they are to use and the fact I can buy them over my 9mth pregnancy while I have money and not have to worry about buying nappies later. :)

well i use cloth my self and the reason i didnt title it why wouldnt you use cloth is because then it would turn into a bla vx la debate and I dont want that
I was basicly curiuos if the cute factor was a major pull card for cloth as it is for me
wanted it a positive cloth thread rather then a you know thread lol

My main reason was environmental they are far better spoises.
Second reason was money, I can't afford to be spending $15-$20 a week on nappies and nor do I want to what a waste of money.
I may as well throw the money down the drain.

The cost, closely followed by the cuteness factor...
I had always intended to use cloth when I had DD but the only cloth I was aware of was the terry flats & when it came down to it, I was too lazy to do all that folding :o so we ended up using disposables. So when I discovered MCN, I made the switch. DH also got a new job while I was pregnant with DS with a major pay cut & I knew we would be struggling to afford sposies for a while so cloth seemed the way to go!
Now I am just so in love with them that I will never be able to go back! Makes you wanna have more babies...:p

3 reasons
they were cute, and to save $ and they were pretty much just as easy as disposables to use!
now im hooked on them for a number other reasons
the enviroment.. i had to go back to disposables for few weeks a couple months back due to a broken washing machine..and oh my god i never actually noticed how much waste they produce!
Also the gel in them that absorbs the wee.. got me thinking eww what yucky chemicals are those.. and i dont want that **** next to my dd skin.
after thinking about all of this i took my cloth down to the laundry matt..thank god now the washing machine is fixed!
Now i try to convert everyone thats not a cloth bum!
Love them will never use a disposable again!
My MAIN reason would have to be the cost of disposables but the environmental and cuteness factors are also very important to me :)

The cost of buying disposables.
Not long after my itti bitti's arrived, which I had saved and saved for a bakers dozen, we were so broke from bills that we couldn't afford food, only DS's formula and I said to DH "Imagine if we had to buy nappies this week" and from then on he went  to cloth...but he still likes that you can throw sposies out and not have to think about them anymore...but I think about sposies constantly if I use them, I feel so guilty!
Then there's the fact that the chemicals in disposables are unregulated and are banned from pads etc because of their link with causing toxic shock syndrome, the environmental impact, the comfort factor!!! (I'd be uncomfy in plastic undies!!!) and DS has eczema and it's highly likely our future bubs will too, so I need to know what's going on their skin and into their bodies to keep them comfortable and the eczema at bay.
Plus, they're gorgeous!!! But at the beginning, it was cost, now that I'm a Mumma and realise that what I do affects the world my babies will grow up in, the environmental factor has taken over.
For me it was cost $$ when I found out I was expecting again and would have two in nappies we had been struggling to buy nappies as DH had had a few short weeks at work so when I had enough I started buying some pre-loved mcn to try out and so if we ran out of sposies then at least we would have these.
Now i'm still building my stash and just love how cute they are. :D
With Av I was lured in cos I could knit covers. I knit a soaker before I even knew what the intention was. Yeah just thought they were cute.
With this bub its cos I was already sucked in. I have done a lot of swaps to geta nice stash. With the cost of living using cloth is about saving money this time.

Environment was the meain reason i switched followed by the cost factor and then by cuteness. :)

For me....cuteness :flowerz: and the cost of sposies. Oh & the fact that both my kidlets are skinny & tall so their clothes fall off them if they wear sposies :p

$$$$$ is what pulled me in cuteness not so much at the start but the more u look into it the harder it gets to just say no i didnt even think about the environment which sounds very bad on my behalf but after reading the stats its great to no that without even thinkin about the environment im doing alot to save it (im a bit lazy wen it comes to recycling:laughing:) But cost is a major issue wen u esp wana stay at home and theres only really 1 income earner as well as the centrelink payments that only really get u so far.

What started me thinking about other options:
A bin FULL of smelly disposables
What sealed the deal for me:
the CUTE factor
What sold the idea to DH:
How much $$$ we save

For us it was the cost first. We started on terry flats cos I didn't know about MCN's til early this year and used disposable at night & when out. Now we use cloth all the time. So great not having to worry about running out of nappies

i started cloth with dd when she was 4 wks old.. she was leaking mucus stools eeeekkkkk !!! - i ended up washing more items coz of this.. they leaked over the furniture her clothes and well it was so much mess to clean up
now i wash her mcn and we dont have pooplosions anymore and her naps dont leak urine either (well rarely )
BUT i have to admit .. dd2 isnt here yet and her stash is pretty impressive.. all because of the cuteness factor

I started because many on here got me hooked back when Boof was 9mths or so because he wee'ed through all sposies !!!!!
The cost was a huge factor for us because we needed to cut back etc then came the environmental reasons & last but certainly not least the cuteness factor !
So glad we use them especially when Squeak has sensitive skin & anytime he has to be in sposies ( medical reasons ) he gets a rash !

First, I thought that they might be the only thing that could get us out of a nappy rash rut we'd been in since Ariene was born :(
Then I became keen to finish buying disposables after using them on Ronan for 3 years...
Then I discovered how CUTE they are!!!:D:D
I started because of the environmental and economic reasons, but then I must admit I stuck to it so furously because of the marter in me
Everyone kept saying that it wouldn't last, they weren't as good etc etc, so I have stuck at it just to stick it in their faces that they were wrong
And now I have found there are so many cute ones out there, I wouldn't ever go back! It would be so much better if my boy was a girl - then DH wouldn't pay out so much at me playing dress ups with (heaven forbid) his SON

Inititally it was for monotary reasons but I was only gonna grab some old fashioned flats until we got through the bad patch. Then I got onto bubhub & found out all about this MCN revolution & now I am hooked!!! I haven't actually got any MCN's yet (got my terry's) but once I get my tax return I am gonna have fun hunting for all of the cute ones online (have already started hunting & bookmarking favs ). I think half the fun is searching & finding an ultra cute pair!
Secondly I am happy for the green factor but I am not sure about the money saving part as I have a feeling once I start buying these cute nappies I wont be able to stop ;)
Well firstly it's because of the chemicals in the disposables. :barf:
A very close second is the cost. I mean if I really, truely believed that disposables were 'better' for my baby, I would pay. I like that I don't have to worry about my baby doing a poo as soon as I've changed him - because it doesn't cost me anything. A few weeks ago ds had a bit of a red bottom, so i thought I would grab some cheap disposables and slather him up with nappy cream so as not to ruin my good nappies. Well guess what?? None of them were cheap. I just couldn't bring myself to buy them, it felt like money down the drain - so i used liners!! :dizzy:
Thirdly, I like the way my baby looks and feels in his cloth. :)
Fourthly, it's become my new hobby. :) I'm searching for the perfect cloth nappy which is as trim as a disposable and doesn't leak and comes in a variety of colours - all of which I like, fits ds like a glove, doesn't require special care and dries quickly.
for us it was the cost of spossies at the begining but i dont think that counts anymore cause i spend far more now on cloth that i would have on throwaways
now its because they are soo cute and i have a ball making them

Environment pure and simple. And then health. We used terry flats to begin with as we didn't know about MCN. So the cute factor of MCN was a total bonus! As are the savings.

Originally it was environmental. Looking at the amount of plastic, chemical gel, and poo that i was throwing into landfill was making me sick. now th reason i continue, there is nothing cuter than a big cloth bum on a little baby!! Also DD's nappy rash is 100% better. and i love telling the skeptics how fantastic they are and yes they really do work!

Definately the cuteness factor :D, then the environmental benefits
Well for me it was cuteness at first!
Then money was what won DH over lol

Oh, and I mentioned to friends in DH's hearing that there are carcenogenics in sposies and DH almost fainted and said "I would have let you use any on her if I had known that!"

It was the environment... I felt guilty about using disposables and searched for something more environmentally friendly but just as effective...
Which means I must confess the truth...
I wouldn't use cloth if MCN did not exist :o
ie I would not use terry flats...
I LOVE MCN and think they are WAAAAY better than disposables in so many ways: money savings, environment, cuteness factor etc etc. But yes it was environment that made me want to find an alternative to disposables.
