Depends on the hospital.

The first one I had was at St Vincents. It cost me $102 and I got $60 back.

The second one was as Randwick Women's hospital. It cost $227 and I got $85 back.

Both of the hospitals I went to were public hospitals. Medicare just don't refund as much as they want to charge ...

Stupid Medicare.

Though whatever hospital you go to may well bulk bill and so you won't have to pay anything at all. Call them up and ask :)

Mine were were approx 150 - the last few were a tad cheaper. I had to have a fair few. You do get some back on medicare and once you reach the safety net you get back nearly all of it & it didn't seem to take me long to reach it through my pregnancy.

Hey Dannii - I pm'd you yesterday I think. ;) . Let me know what you think.

I am in the public system doing shared care with my GP and she refers me for the u/s to a local place that does it and it's free. Was last time too!

im doing shared care also... but my doc wont refer me to the hospital. instead, the first scan we had was about $160 and we got nothing back and the second one, because I rang my doc and said I cant afford to pay that much for another one, she reffered me to another place that is going to cost me $120- which I'll get $40 (?) back from...

I distinctly remember her telling me that the 2nd scan would be free though.

Ring around a couple of places and find out if they bulk bill then go back to your Dr and say you would like to get your scans done at that place instead!

I know the place i am going to isn't in your area but it is called Northern Suburbs X-Ray perhaps their is a sister branch of them near you?

I used to work as a receptionist at a radiology practice (which majorly ripped people off but we won't go there...). private ultrasounds cost from about $120 - $250 depending on how far along you are (the cost increases as u get more pregnant) and is more expensive if u are having a multiple pregnancy. after u claim from medicare u will be out of pocket $85 (thats what it is in the ACT, not sure if the medicare gaps are country wide). as the other girls have said u should get bulk billed at a public hospital. also if u go privately and have a centrelink healthcare or pension card u should get bulkbilled or at least charged the schedule fee where the gap is only about $15. hope this is helpful!!

I wonder why it is that some places charge and other's don't? Do Dr's get a cut of the money by referring ppl to certain places?

The one I had at 19wks at the public hosp. was free

The other one I had (for nuchal translucency) at 14wks was at a radiology place and it cost $55 (they said any other obstetric medical ultrasounds I will need during this pregnancy will be bulk billed from now on (seen as I paid the initial $55)....

but I think if I were an older mum to be in the 'higher risk' category the public hosp. would have done it for free. We had it done as we wanted to be on the safe side (prob paranoid :o )

The 4D one I am having tomorrow (:smiliedance: ) is going to cost around $170, but is not for medical reasons so I dont get anything back from Medicare.

Sorry about the novel..... :ecomcity: :ecomcity:

here i go again im getting up on my soap box

yes i know u/s equipment is expensive but i think we should all get a certain number of u/s free because they are needed to cheak our babys health i had 3 all up one when i was really sick to cheak the baby was alright another at 20 weeks for cheak up and to find out the sex after this one i asked if i could book another aas they couldnt determend sex and i was told i would have to pay for the next one so we decided not to and then as part of a uni study on the effects of labour and delivery on pelvic floor muscles i had a 3d u/s done for free i think it is wrong to expect parents to pay for a service that is there not determine the health of there baby sure if they have already haad theyre geneeral u/s usually done at 16-20 weeks and they decide that they want to have another on then maybe they should pay but not for emegency ones or ones the doctors surrgests
