View Full Version : Anaesthetic and Mood Swings...

Somewhere deep in the recesses of my mind I am thinking there can be a residual side effect of mood swings and irratibility after aneasthetic?

My 4.5yr old Nephew had his tonsils out last week, and since has been extremely irritable, with wild mood swings and tantrums....and he keeps saying to his mum that he doesn't mean to get upset or cry but he can't help it, it just happens. It really upsets him! :gloomy: The poor thing really isn't coping well with his new self! (Neither is his mum!)

He says his throat isn't really sore, and all seems to be healing well, but his behaviour is extremely unlike his usual self...she is even thinking of not sending him to kinder because he is so unpredictable.

I have tried searching the net but can't find anything.

Does anyone know if there could be a correlation, or am i just imagining things?

If he has had recurring bouts of tonsilitis then he probably just doesn't know himself now.

I had it constantly from age 3 to 14 when I finally had them out and I felt like a completely different person after the healing period ended. I imagine going from feeling pretty average all the time to feeling completely different (healthy, energetic etc) would be a bit confusing for a youngster..

Having said all that.. I really have no idea.

:hugs: to the little guy. Hope he's feeling himself again soon.

Sorry - didn't see the thread before

MOTH and DS take aneasthetic like water

I react badly :barf: for days and so does DD - DD had grommets at 2 and was awful:yes:

I swear by Rescue Remedy and Brauers Calm for DD, it doesn't "fix" things, but it takes the edge of behaviour

I'd be getting your nephew checked out by the Dr also just to make sure that everything is healing up OK. I'd still send him to kinder tjough with a quite word to the teacher to get him back into his life routine and maybe take his mind off things

Aneasthetic just doesn't agree with some people

post-anaesthetic depression is certainly a reasonably well-known phenomenon, so I can't see why this couldn't present as mood swings in a child. Best to get mum to take him to the GP :)

Thanks guys, I've been googling all arvo but couldnt fine anything to do with lingering effects of Anaesthetic.

Glad to know I am not going nuts!!

RR is a great idea, I will suggest, plus the trip to the GP. Poor tyke, he sounds like it is really upsetting him, as he knows his moods are not ok, but can't control them.

Tam any links that you know of that might provide more info?
