Heya

I'm still in NZ because some STUPID people have held us up for the last two months so now I'm seriously running out of options for birthing this baby.

I was going to give the birth centres in Brisbane a call but then I realised I need a GP referral, will they let me put my name down without one?

Thanks!

I would call them ASAP and explain your situation, see what they will say. Maybe they can accept a NZ GP ref?

I would also contact Ann at http://www.prenatalcentre.com.au/ for advice, very knowledgeable.

you usually only need the referall at your first appointment so i'd ring up and make an appoitnment first.

No need to panic...yet. We moved here (Brisbane) in May from TGA NZ, and now i am 31weeks - still no Hospital!!
I have a GP and she refered me to The Mater, and they turned me down because they are full!! Now i have to go to my GP again and try other hospitals in the area, i was early with my first!
If you don't make a booking etc, no hospital will turn you down if you need to give birth! But you will miss out on the whole experience!
There are other things to consider too, like you also need a Medicare card! And whether you are going public or private, if you have the money and insurance to pay for it.

Even blood tests here cost you, the doctors aren't cheap even though you get a rebate form medicare after, its $90 odd for a long consult and you only get half back. It was $58 for my Glucose bloods!!

Nz made having a baby so easy compared to this!

I'm still in the dark about SO much!!

It is way easier in NZ, I had my first in Perth and was 8 months pregnant before I got into a hospital!

I'm 19 weeks now so the BC isn't an option, and I just found out that the only way to have a waterbirth is in a BC so we'll be staying home, even if I have to do it myself! :D

A GP referral doesn't take long.

In all honesty when I got my referral to the Birth centre from my GP I didn't even give it to them.
They didn't ask for it and I had my U/S and bloods with me.

Like PPer said though, it doesn't hurt to call and ask!

I'll still check, but I don't want to keep thinking it's an option when it's really unlikely I'll get in...:o
