View Full Version : Which bottle is best?
My parents arecoming to stay in 4 weeks time :smiliedance: My DD will be 6 weeks old so I would like to express milk and get my mum to feed her so DH and I can go out somewhere. Which brand of bottle is best for young babies? Also when you express milk how will I know how much to leave for her per feed?? Thanks for all your help, is all a bit confusing!

Hi,
The bottle just depends, but lots of people are talking about Pigeon peristaltic. Personally I went for Cannon teats because they were recommended to me by my LC.
The feeds are worked out with the babies weight
Weight in grams x 180mls = a feed in mls
6 or 8 feeds
6 is 4th hrly and 8 is 3rd hrly
Hi
we did the same thing with DS. Not only because we wanted to be able to leave him with someone and go out, but also so he got used to the bottle for when I returned for work.
We use avent bottles. I love them. I love the fact that all the different bit and bobs that they sell all fit there bottles. The sippy cup spouts the handles from the sippy cups. It fantastic. They are also proven to reduce colic.
I was told by the CHN that to figure out how much to give to use the following formula;
weight in kg x 150 divided by the number of feeds they are currently having per day.
For example Ds is 7.7 kg and is having 6 feeds per day so it is
7.7 x 150 divided by 6 =192.5 mls. We put 200mls is his bottle
Hope this has helped

I use the Avent bottles too! DS took to them straight away! :smiliedance:
I have the Avent breast pump too and you can express your milk straight into the bottle - the pump and the bottles will need to be steralised though! :)

DD#2 and DS have both gone for Avent bottles and teats quite readily.
DD#1 I tried just about every bottle and teat on the market (in the pre-Avent days - 15 years ago), and would not take ANYTHING apart from nature's own packaging, which was quite a problem, as I went back to uni when she was 6 weeks old.
I really like the fact that the Avent bottles progress to be beaker cups and straw cups, too. I was using the bottles still for DD#2 (who is 5) earlier this year with the cap with the straw holes punched in it, so she could have a drink in the car without it spilling, so they are good value in that respect, too.

We used Avent too for both #1 & #2 and found them to be great. Some of the cheaper ones you get on the market leak from around the rim where you tigheten the lid/teat on..So Avent have the  thumbs up from me....You can even buy bottle cleaners...they generally come in a 2 pack - bigger one to clean the bottle and small one to clean the teat...
Congrats on your new bub by the way :smiliedance:

I also breastfeed and have used the avent ones they are good....also the Pigeon ones mentioned by goosie22 I have heard are really good also....good luck !

Pigeon peristaltic teats are great, thats what i use. do not use any easy flow teats, dont use the Avent teats, basically if you are able to have the bottle tipped upside down and milk drips out of it...its a bit of a no no :shame: coz your bub is young you dont want any chance of breast refusal due to her liking the fast flow teat (i dont want to scare you in any way...just make you aware coz i have dealt with breast refusal for a long time!) :o
The pigeon teats bub has to basically suck on it like a nipple to get milk out and they fit all wide neck bottles.
Also my suggestion would be to have maybe 2 bottles with 100mls in them...depending how long your doing out for...if its longer make it more. Just so if your DD only wants a snack it wont be a waste of liquid gold!!!
if there is a bottle that she doesnt drink, you can have it put in the freezer for next time, EBM is fine up to 3months in the freezer.
Have fun :D

my DS used avent bottles, which (obviously) worked with the avent breast pump, which was great, but my DD didn't take as easily to bottle feeding, in the end i changed to tommee tippee and have to say i prefer them to the avent. the teat is softer and the same teat does until 18 months i think. mind you, i started her bottlefeeding at 7 months, so this teat has suited her since then.
anyway, i would actually recommend tommee tippee bottles now.
when i needed to know how much to pump off i would just read the back of a can of formula which tells you how much formula to make for age of child, and use that as a guideline.
Hello again
I went by the back of a formula tin once and wasted alot of BM.
BF babies tummies are smaller than FF babies tums. BF babies feed more frequently but in smaller amounts.
Maybe do a test run before you go out with DH if you need to know exactually how much.
My DS is in childcare and his milk intake various alot hense y i have suggested the small bottles of EBM. he sometimes only has a 120ml bottle and will last him a couple of hrs and hes 8 months next week!!!!!!

I too have heard the pigeon teats are best for BF babies although ive never tried them. I used Avent on occasion until my son was almost 3mths then he refused bottles. I tried nuk and tommee tippee but nothing worked - he only wanted boob!! He's only now just started having EBM again from a bottle. And he is 8mth and the max EBM he's had is 140ml per feed.

After initially starting with Avent bottles & gear I tried one of the Pigeon peristaltic teats today... so far so good! She seemed to take to it well. She drank nearly 100ml of EBM without any of the fussing and complaining she's been inflicting on poor DH when I'm out.
The Pigeon teat fits beautifully into the wide neck Avent bottles.
Thanks to you all for the advice especially re amounts to leave, I think I will try her with the Pigeon peristaltic and see how she gets on.
Cheers,
Jxx
