I have read a couple of threads lately about sleeping bags and sleepwear for bubs in winter. Now, I get the whole idea of hte sleeping bags to keep bub warm without blankets for those cheeky monkeys who like to wriggle out! BUT....and this is where i'm thinking maybe I'm wierd??..............
What is going on with layers and layers and layers of clothes
and blankets
and mittens
and so much polar fleece?????????
I wonder how much do you wear to bed?? Cos I know when I go to bed it might be a little chilly when you first get in, but then you warm up pretty quick and stay warm!
Ds generally wears a singlet, flannalette pj's, sometimes sox, top sheet, cotton blanket, woolen blanket and some nights polar fleece on top. THAT'S IT!! Yes sometimes his little hands are cold, but this doesn't mean he is cold. He is still toasty. He is not a big sweater or overly warm baby, but if I dressed him in fleece pj's for example he would boil!
Is it just me?? btw I don't mean this to sound like I'm havinga go at anyone, I'm jsut curious to see how many others tend to dress their bubs a bit more lightly for bed??

Jem, I used to dress DD very lightly - and then we moved to Melbourne :( She won't keep blankets on, most of the time she won't even allow them over her when I put her to bed - I have to sneak in when she's asleep and put them on. So I'm dressing her more warmly than I used to.

Last night and generally the last few weeks she's been wearing:
nappy
tshirt (usually short sleeve)
fleece track pants
fleece jumper
socks.
(edit: fleece meaning just regular fuzzy material, not polar fleece which would be warmer)

When she's asleep I'll add a light to medium weight blanket or thin doona.

Also, we have no central heating and I haven't set up a portable heater in her room yet, so it can get fairly cold in our house at 3am and I dress her for that. If we had central heating and I knew her room would be at 72o all night I'd have her in lighter weight pajamas.

My little boy generally wears an all in one singlet, with his flanellette pj's or a long sleeve all in one, his bib and socks.
Then he has his fluffy blanket and the his quilt ontop :) Stays warm all night:thumbsup:

Where i live it gets awfully cold!! Last night it was 2'c:eek: We do have cenral heating but we dont use it at night coz i dont see the sense in it when your coverd in blankets.
Anyway ds sleeps in:
singlet,
nappie,
bonds suit and a
sleeping bag.
I do have a quilt but only put it on him if its really cold!

For me polar flece and bed is a no, no. I find that it is too easy to the child to overheat and if they are wearing it or attached to it they can't get out or away when they are too hot.

I live in Perth. Last winter i spent 8 weeks in a caravan whilst waiting for my new house to finish. Not very pleasant with a 10 month old. It was 0 or there abouts most nights and DD slept in -
a singlet
bonds wondersuit
tracksuit with feet
sheet material sleeping bag (i made it myself, very light weight)
warmer blanket sleeping bag (i made it myself too)
We had an oil heater on in the caravan, but it was still cold. Most night she slept no problem but occasionally she woke because she was cold.

My rule of thumb is like this, babies need 1 more layer than we do, generally i class this as a singlet. Then i dress them like i would.
If i am in flannel PJ then the kids are in bonds all in ones or cotton equivalent.
If i have the sheet on then DD has a sheet and DS has a muslin wrap.
If i have the sheet & doona on then DD has sheet & doona and DS has muslin wrap & blanket.

When DD was in sleeping bag i had 2 one light weight, sheet weight and one heavier weight, equivalent to a doona/blanket and used them accordingly.

Hope this helps.

I agree with mummabear in that IMO they generally need one more layer than what we're wearing. I stick to this during the day but at night it's really cold in our house and DS just WON'T keep his blankets on. He either wears singlet, nappy, flanelette 2 piece pjs and socks, with a sheet and polar fleece blanket on top (he kicks them off anyway) or nappy, singlet and polar fleece sleeping bag with a sheet over the top.

I'm always worried about his singlet coming untucked though so I might invest in a few singlet suits - dumb me, didn't think of that

if i put my DS in that much stuff he'd bake!! the most i can get away with is sheet, thermal hospital style blanket, and when it's really bad his quilt. when i put layers on him he just sweats through. i can't even put a beanie on him. the only problem is his little arms get cold cos he like them out of the blankets, but have solved that by putting the airconditioner on 21 degrees warm. i tried putting him in with me once, but he got so hot under my duck down doona that he spent all night trying to get away and didn't sleep properly.
