 Hi Girls
We are looking at the possibility of moving to WA sometime soon and I was looking around at high schools or maybe school of the air as too which would be the better for my son???
I was horrified when I read a review of the Kalgoorlie high school:thumbsdown: bullies rewarded not punished and the Principal wasn't professional either and not liked by the reviewer at all....
If you could provide some much needed - trusted - info into the high schools and whether school of the air is available or not would be much appreciated
Thanks,
LJ

Where abouts are you thinking of moving to?
Hey Femme
Generally the areas around the south-west have pretty good schools although I don't have exact knowledge. I know the Catholic college in Bunbury is very good
If you are going to be living in kalgoorlie or close enough to town to attend a high school then school of the air is not available . Kalgoorlie high school is not the worst in the world but if you prefer your child can go to the private high school in town its called John paul college or do home schooling (theres quite a few in town who choose to do this). The private school is not too expensive and is not too bad ,my sil kids go to the catholic primary school and thats nice too.Otherwise its a great place to live and something of an experience.

Hi Julie, I didn't know your from WA:D we aren't 100% on an 'exact' area at this stage, as we are very, very early in the process of planning it all. But DF is looking at mining so it could be anywhere....we are sort of looking Kalgoorlie probably because is well known and giving us an idea of what to expect.
Though as to moving it would be in between terms give or take.

I appreciate it anyway, I've seen Bunbury has come up on a couple of property searches we've made...have to keep it mind.
He is currently going too a country primary school and is accustomed to not being a 'delicate boy' but plays by the rules & when I read that review I knew I must ask the girls at bubhub what it's really like:thumbsup:

thanks for the info; if there is any possibility of keeping in an actual school would be preferable as he would miss this social interaction and I really think it's important in the teenage years personally. I'm not sure about private schooling but again something to definitely look into, much appreciated

Southwest is actually pretty good in terms of facilities, schools etc.
Kalgoorlie isnt exactly South west though - is considered the goldfields .... and while Kal itself has a decent enough population, there isnt much else around for many many many many miles.
(except lots of mines )
Mostly the mines are pretty much in the middle of nowhere ....
Lots do FIFO though. What kind of work does your DH do?

pretty much thought there wouldn't be much else around but that isn't really much different to where we are now...so we've thinking in those terms it should be pretty much the same.
DH does laboring and truck work...he has his HR license and is up-grading HC license in the next few days or so.

Cool - he should have no problems getting a job here. They are seriously crying out for work.
I thought it was more so up North, but should be pretty good oppurtunities in the goldfields as wells.
Would you consider Fly In Fly Out? Schools in Perth are much much better (but can be a crappy lifestyle ......especially with a new baby :p)

LOL Julie
OK I grew up in Kal and to be honest it isnt a place I want to go back to, not to raise a child. In fact it was one of the reasons I left Bugs dad as he lives there and works in the mines up there as well as a machinery operator.
Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

I haven't lived there but Kal is sort of a bit "blokey".Not really a majorly family friendly sort of place.Lots of fly-in fly out mining blokes live there etc.
South West is great Buselton is really beautiful so is Margaret River.

She's not saying that. She's saying that FIFO is crappy with a new baby.
Perth with a new baby is far from crappy.

was gonna say .... i know they say Perth is boring but its our lazy lifestyle that makes it perfect to raise a baby....no rush rush rush and great wide open spaces for kids to play in.

As a Bunno (Bunbury ) local who is a high school teacher I can give you a run down. If you are looking public I would recommend Bunbury SHS or Australind SHS if you are living out that way. Bunbury is actually getting two new high schools. Dallyellup middle school (and there is lots of houses for sales out there) and Ern Manea College which will be a year 11/12 super college situated between the tafe and uni which will be unreal.
Dallyellup is only 10 mins out of Bunbury and its a brand new subdivision.
If you choose to go private, Catholic College is good however I do think you have to have come from a catholic primary school.Do check this though as this rule may not have started yet. There is Grammar which is excellent but has price tag to match. The three main highschools (at the moment) are very full but when Dallyellup opens that should pan out. If you want more info please PM me.

I lived in Kal for about 6 years. If we had stayed any longer, I would have sent the kids off to the private high school - The stories about the public high school were awful.
As for Kal not being a family town - I disagree. I had 2 of my 3 kids out there, and found it to be very family friendly :) lots of sporting groups, plenty of playgrounds and some nice parks :) I guess it depends on what you want out of a town.
Have you thought of going North ? I now live in the Pilbara. Its awesome up here :D

Hello, we have just moved to Margaret River and my husband has just gotten a job in the mines as a truck driver, he was in the army and had his HC license but they were still interested in him when he only had HR.
Try Wallis Drilling and Red Dirt for a job both told DH they would have him a job withing 2 weeks!! The only problem is you can do much until you are in WA.
It will be FIFO from Perth.
Let me know if I can be of any more assistance.
Emma
