Hi Guys
I’m 18 weeks 4 days pregnant and have been suffering shocking toothaches since Easter Sunday. Finally yesterday after waiting for surgery I had three teeth pulled. My concern is I was relying on panadeine the last few days to get me through the pain. I was not taking more than the recommended dose of 8 in a 24 hour period but I did not see a doctor to get them prescribed I went to the pharmacy and the pharmacist advised me this is the safest and strongest pain killer I can have while pregnant.
So to my knowledge they are safe but I’m still concerned about the effect they might have on my bubby. I have been in tremendous amounts of pain and im sure that has stressed bubby out. I just want to hear your experiences with panadeine? Whether or not you would take them
I had the 3 teeth pulled yesterday and hopefully if I need a painkiller Panadol will now be sufficient. I’m really worried
PLEASE HELP
I've never heard of Panadeine being 'safe' during pg. Panadol or nothing.
Sorry.

I personally wouldn't take it - but then I've never had toothache, let alone during pregnancy. You poor thing :hugs:
If you saw a reputable pharmacist, I would trust their advice. Every time I've been to the chemist this pregnancy, and asked "can i take this during pregnancy?" she looks it up on her computer and prints me off a thing (statement?) which outlines which category the drug falls into, and what studies have been done with it and pregnant women. She gives me her advice (which is not always dictated by "sales figures" - more often than not she says no don't take it) and then lets me decide for myself, based on her advice and the thing she prints off for me.
So, (my rambling does have a point) if you trust your pharmacist, then it should be fine.
Hope your teeth settle down - my hubby has had awful tooth problems lately, and they just removed the one causing the pain, and he's been so much better ever since. It took probably 5 days after the removal before he was "back to normal".

I've been in and out of hospital with high blood pressure and with that comes shocking headaches and migraines... they gave me panadeine each time in hospital and tell me to take it when I come home too so as far as i know they are completely safe to take and I have been sparingly taking them - panadol just isnt strong enough!
I think the ones to worry about are the anti-inflammatory ones with ibuprofen in them which isnt in panadeine.

I have worked in the Pharmacuetical industry for 12 years and Panadiene is ok to take for short term, honestly the stress and pain you are in would prop affect bub more than a few panadiene. I would not take anything in first Trimester though. as long as everything with your pregnancy if fine I would'nt worry too much. Try to alternate Paracetamol with the Panadiene (To limit the amount of codiene).
You could try cold packs on your jaw too
Just check the packet of what your taking, there's alot of brands out there now and it's easy to get confused. As the others said, don't take any asprin, nurofen. I would always buy any medication from a pharmacy and ask for proffessional advice. It scares me that they sell this stuff in supermarkets now!
Hope you feel better soon, all the best:)

Everything mandymoo said..
I also just checked up in my trusty drug book and Panadiene is Catergory A which means it is safe to take during pregnancy.
Hi Guys,
I have been getting migraines's this pregnancy and my ob put me on panadiene forte. codeine is a category A drug which is sfae during pregnancy, I was worried to but I figure bith my ob and GP wouldn't give me something I couldn't take. I am now still taking the occasionally panadiene.
Cheers

I was prescribed panadiene forte last night for bad haemmeroid pain. I also asked the pharmacy about it being safe for bubs and he said it is. I bought as well as the Panadol rapid which has no codiene. I took two of these and was fine and would only take panadiene if it was absolutely necessary didn't need it so felt better about not taking it. Just a personal feeling that the stronger the medication the worse for your body so I try to avoid it.
According to both my obstetrician and my GP, taking panadeine is perfectly safe.
Panadeine Forte, due to its higher codeine content, should be limited. It won't harm the baby but it might hurt your bum a bit (constipation :o ).

I wouldn't worry to much... I went to hospital about a month ago (i was 19weeks) with a really bad migrane... and they gave me panadine forte... they said if i get another to take it again... as long as i am not having them all day every day it is better for me to have the small doses than to stress bubs out... so I wouldn't worry to much...just try not to take anymore the rest of your pregnancy... and you should be all good.

When i was about 16 weeks pregnant i had a horrible tooth infection my face was so puffy and i was in heaps of pain at the same time i was getting horrible headaches. My ob gave me a script for panadeine forte and told me to take it whenever my headache and toothache started as my headaches were lasting 5 days and not going away. With my toothache i took a couple of panadeine fort at night to get sleep and would go without during the day to limit what i was taking.Try not to take codeine for too long because you can get a headache called an opiet headache wich is from prolonged use of codeine.I got this and it was the worst ever.So panadol is best for prolonged use.

They quite frequently give you panadeine forte in the early stages of labour too - as long as its not prolonged use, which can be a problem because a) codeine can be addictive and b) codeine can cause constipation - then you and bubs will be find.

hi there
i know that you not suppose to take these type of pain killers in early stages of pregnancy only 30 + weeks,, the only safe ones where panadol and herion ect
i had toochacke my whole pregnancy and only could ever take panadol and ice paks and toochacke stuff you put on your gums to numb it! please see a doc as i was warned never to paindene for pain relief in earlier stages other than 30+ weeks. and i suffered LOL
stacey
I went to my doc today and she said it its perfectly safe and its actually the other way around. Though You are right about not taking it in early stages of pregnancy however that is the ( 1ST TRIMESTER) It is actually not meant to take it in late stages of pregnancy because of the Codeine they have found if taken "regularly" The baby has some withdrawal symptoms from it after the birth.
The amounts I have been taking are not dangerous and have not harmed bub at all. Im in (MIDDLE STAGES - second trimester of pregnancy and panadeine is perfectly safe. I had my ultrasound today and she is just perfect and healthy. My doc has also said like some of the other girls mentioned If pain got unbearable she would be happy to give me panadeine Forte for night time to get to sleep. Im sorry you had to go through all that pain I now how you feel. Thankfully though mine is nearly gone, I am not even using Panadeine anymore!! Hip Hip Horray!!

the only safe ones where panadol and herion ect
I am not so sure about this, I was told by my doc simple paracetamol and Panadol is OK, but Herron is not, because it is anti-inflammatory
maddymoo

This is where people get confused - Herron is a brand name as is Panadol. Both brands make products which contain paracetamol & ibuprofen, asprin and codeine. So Herron paracetamol is fine but Herron blue (Ibuprofen) is not.
ALWAYS read the ingredients on the packet:yes or get a medical proffessionals advice:)
