Hi Im new here and my bub is 7 months on the 27th this month, I was wondering if he should be waking 3 to 4 times a night....People I talk to say that he should be sleeping thru or not waking as much....I am breastfeeding and when I am up with his feeds he only takes all up 10 mins and Im back in bed.....But a new thing he has started now is I begin to feed him and he sucks alittle and then pulls off and starts to cry so I try the other boob and he does the same so.....I just put his dummy back in and put him to bed which he seems quite happy do.....My question is.....Why is he doing this???? LOL ... Before getting him up I try and put his dummy in and tuck him back and settle him with some "shhhshhhh's" but that doesnt work ......

Hey thanks for your reply and welcome!
I have tried the food thing and he gets dinner, dessert and boob and that doesnt seem to work either....
I have even given him a bottle of formula a few times and that didnt work either.... I think its just a comfort thing more than anything cause he doesnt seem to want my boob everytime when he wakes only sometimes....
Anyway nice to meet you ...Whats your bubs name ?

i think its a bit of an old wives tale (fill them with solids to make them sleep) seriously, you sound perfectly normal to me.
Does bub sleep near you? can you possibly move him closer to feed or cuddle easier. It sounds like he needs some reassurance that you (and your wonderful boobs) are there for him.
like the other mumma said, bub will grow out of it a some stage.
if he does want a feed maybe try laying down to feed that way it is more comfortable for you, and you can nap (well half nap) it sounds like he may be trying to drop a feed and waking like he usually would but then realising he isn't hungry after all.
hope it helps

Hi ....He his in his own room and Im thinking he is starting to drop a feed to .... Im thinking to just put up with it as Im not up long and it doesnt really bother me its just everyone else saying....."oh he should be sleeping thru or shouldnt be waking that much" So to me its fine...Hes just lucky Hes beautiful that I dont mind getting up and stealing a kiss at 4 am ...lol
Apart from that hes a really good boy...I always say to my partner that we are very lucky!!!
We have no probs with him going down to sleep .....I pop in his bed and he goes to sleep by himself.....I didnt want to rock my baby to sleep.........No Way.....lol
But lets keep our fingers crossed....Hope he stays this way.....lol:)
Hi and welcome to the forum.
Jade (eight months) started to do this just last month too. She has always slept through the night and sudeenly started to wake at night for a comfort feed. I upped her solid food intake at dinner time and probelm solved.
This may or may not be the solution for you and your little man, just another suggestion.
I hope it's just a phase and you both get a full nights sleep soon.

Well it does sound very normal to me :D
My first didn't start sleeping through until 12m and was very much a comfort feeder during the night with a few sucks then back to sleep.
To me I have to agree that it sounds like he is getting ready to drop a feed .. so I'd continue doing what you are doing for a while longer
Try to resettle with out feeding when he first wakes.
If he insists then offer milk - let her have what he likes
If he keeps up with the few sucks then pulling off then he really isn't
hungry but he knows it's there if he wants it - ie it's reassurance that his needs will be met.
I'd say within the month he'll have dropped that feed completely or be waking later for it. :D
Some times bubs drop a feed completely -- other times they might just redo their schedule :)
Rest assured that 7m is a perfectly normal age for multiple night wakings !

My girl only started sleeping through at 8 mth and now at 18mths still wakes up for a bottle once through the night! so dont stress..
I rang Ngala about it and they said that whether or not you are breastfeeding or botttle/solids.. its a 'behavioural' thing and that the child will learn not to wake up..
the only way i solved the problem initially (and this sounds horrible) is for a week i would just get up and put the dummy in, settle but not pick up and let Lucy cry, going in every 5 mins.. no sleep for a week but a baby that slept through afterwards (except for now of course the little spoilt thing..):(

Yeah I think I am going to start the dummy thing...But you know what its like in the middle of the night....lol...you want to get things done as quick as possible without too much fuss so they dont wake and think its time to get up.....But I will try....:smiliedance:

Dont get me wrong - it was SO SO SO tough.. and of course i didnt get to sleep for the whole week either (didnt help we lived in the smallest house ever and the noise.. ) but it was so worth it.. but i cant really talk coz im slack now and i get up and give her a bottle @ 2 or 3 or 4am and i have another bub coming.. ARGH!!

Hi,
Sounds pretty normal to me also, Sleep is a developmental stage same as all other milestones your baby will do it when ready. There is a lot of pressure to make your baby conform to the "good Baby mold" I say resist it and follow your insincts.............who wants little robots all doing the same thing babies are people let them be individuals.
http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/babes.html
But a new thing he has started now is I begin to feed him and he sucks alittle and then pulls off and starts to cry so I try the other boob and he does the same so.....
Hey there
My girl is one week from 12 months and she wakes up to feed every 2 hours so I have just plopped a mattress on my bedroom floor now that shes mobile and co-sleep with her there as she likes to be around me all the time. But thats not why I'm replying just some background info.
Anyway what you said mine has done that when teething but even more noticably so last month when she was coming down with a virus and had a throat/ear infection so keep an eye out for that too just incase.
Cheers

My 12mo ds has only just started sleeping through. Until now he has been waking several times a night for boob.
If he's just having a little out of each breast, perhaps he might be thirsty and just after the watery fore milk?

Have you tried just giving him a bit of water when he wakes? My DS at almost 7mths also started crying etc after just a couple of minutes BF which lasted for about 4wks but just as suddenly as it started it stopped. He seemed as though he was really fustrated or in pain or something but who knows.
As for the night feeds, DS slept through from 6wks but my neice has just stopped her night feeds and started sleeping through at 7mths. They put up with a bit of midnight crying and sometimes sticking the dummy back in but it was only tough for them for a week or two and now they all get a good nights sleep.
If it is'nt troubling you though - keep doing what your doing. Good luck
