I have a question for all you artsy craftsy, creative types! (or anyone else who wants to reply!):D
My nanna gave me a beautiful sari that her friend brought back from an overseas trip. It's about 6 metres long and veeeeery pretty! (I'm hardly game to touch it! )
Anyway... question is... what should I do with it?!
My nanna gave it to me, thinking I would have some use for it... but I have no idea!
What can I make it into? I thought maybe curtains, but it's quite thin material?!
All suggestions are more than welcome:D
Thanks:thumbsup:
What about some cushion covers? Purely decorative of course....
Hmmm, curtains would be good, but perhaps on a room where you don't need proper light exclusion or need to block the view in. You could also put it up on a wall in a bedroom as a wall decoration. Is it strong enough to use as a throw rug on a bed or couch? Maybe in a spare bedroom so it won't get too much wear but just look pretty. You could always wear it, you know. My friend is coming back from a trip home to India this week, and I asked her to buy me a sari. She's gonna teach me how to wear it. She says saris look great on preggers women. Oh, not sure what kids you've got, but wouldn't it be cool as a curtain on a bottom bunk to make a cubby house! Hmmm, all out of ideas now, I'll check back in if I get more brainwaves.
What about a bed canopy? I've seen that before, buy yourself some curtain rods and drape it over your bed - very exotic and romatic (not necessarily girly). I'm sure if you have a look at some on the net, that might give you some ideas (if you're into a bed canopy idea).
Cheers

Thanks for the ideas... good ones!!!
Confession: I don't actually know how to 'wear' a sari... and plus, my boy is only ten months... I can't even wear an elastic waisted skirt, or he pulls it off... IN PUBLIC!!
Using it in a spare bedroom, as a bed cover would be great... only problem is we live in a bomby rental in brisbane! My spare room is stored with miscellaneous ****... a desk and a sewing machine!
Maybe I should just continue to hang on to it... until someone teaches me to wear it... or we buy our own house and I have a spare room. Or maybe I will just make some cushion covers, like Razzle suggested. Geez, I'm a decisive type, aren't I!!
you could also think about a table cloth, placemats, napkins, table runner (you could probably make all that with 6 meters)
I like the curtain idea, but make sure you put it on a window that doesn't get too much direct sunlight, I had a gorgous sari I used as a curtain but the the side facing out got bleached with the sun .
ohh... or even curtain edging, instead of the full curtain
If you ever come to Sydney, give me a bell and I'll teach you how to wear one.
You'll impress the pants off everyone at the next wedding you attend :)

It's a deal, Beany... though I never go to Sydney!! So maybe its an empty deal  ! Maybe I could try to find out in hte mean time!!
Hmm... tablecloth... thats a good one too!! We never sit at the table, so it would actually be safe on the table at the moment!
Ah well, if you aren't gonna wear it, I'll think of a few snip options ...
Most saris have an extra special end, with extra fancy embroidery work. You can cut bits of that, mount and frame them. Great artwork for around the house
You can also use the fabric to make clothing for yourself - a skirt or a simple strappy top perhaps? Depending on your prowess with a sewing machine, you could go all out and make yourself something very pretty and utterly unique.
You can cut a long strip out of it and make a table runner (instead of a full tablecloth) and matching napkins.
You could go and buy some ordinary, naff notebooks and cover them with the cloth. This leaves you with great looking notebooks (that would cost a fortune if you tried to buy them) that you could use as diaries or give to people as gifts.
Whew! There goes my burst of creativity for this month! :D

How rude of me... I didn't even come back to say thank you on my own thread!
Well, Thank you! for all of these great ideas!
I'd really like to be able to make a nice top or skirt out of it... but I'm so scared of ruining it. Maybe I should just leave it folded up in a storage box for a bit longer... that'd be useful.
Nah...In all seriousness... I think I will go with the curtain idea after all... I have just put up a bamboo blind in the loungeroom and think that it would look great in front of that! ...and then maybe wiht the leftovers I will attempt a piece of clothing... or cover some note books... oh, here I go again....!:p
