any ideas ladies?

My son Flynn (13 weeks) seems to have really bad wind pain. He screams, wriggles, grunts and does all those 'windy' things.. but he just can't fart!

the only thing that settles him is being on the change table, nappy off, with me putting his legs over his head, bum to the sky and I even have to...well...spread his cheeks.. LOL .. if I do that he lets out some rippers!! (and seems to feel better) but he can't seem to do them himself at all! he never just spontaneously lets one go

he's fully BF, just started 2 days ago on zantac for reflux (which seems to be working for that issue btw), I tried infacol and gripe water (no luck), infants friend maybe? does that help with bottom burps?

is mummy going to have to 'fart' him forever?? not so convenient when we are out, and also when he is asleep he wakes up with pain and the whole farting routine wakes him up totally!

he burps ok himself (well, if I pat his back and all)

gosh, I have written this post in about 5 goes as I keep having to stop to deal with screaming fits! arrrgh!

ANY advice appreciated!

When Cobey was little I'd lay him on his back and do bicycle legs and he'd eventually fart... also bending his knees and crunching them into his tummy (you know what I mean?) helped...
Are you burping him? That might prevent the issue.

And now that he's 2 he has absolutely no trouble letting them rip... and laughing once he's done

thanks seekrit - glad to hear Cobey has no problem letting them go now.. I bet Dad is proud ;) I know my DH would be!!

I think I'll have to keep 'farting' him for now .. :(

am seeing a chiro on monday.. wonder if that will help? fingers crossed!

I used to use Infants Friends to help my bub and it was great, but my Singaporean neighbours introduced me to a Chinese Herbal remedy that you use externally.

It is Yu Yee Oil (come sin a red and gold tin, with a glass bottle inside)

You rub literally only 2 - 4 drops on your hands to warm it and then hold your hands near their stomach, or once you know their skin doesn;t react you can place you ands (and hence the oil) onto their skin. I do this before I put him to bed (afer a feed) and it has worked amazingly well.

As a bonus, it is great in helping them to breath!!! I just put a couple of drops on his singlet. (sort of a mild tiger balm type smell)

It cost me $7.50 from an Asian Supermarket over here for a 48ml bottle, but as you only use a few drops, it'll be about a years worth!!!

dammit .. I was hoping it would be some fart-stopping virus .. I would insist that your son come and breathe all over my husband

yes ,. he will learn to fart .. it is weird for them I guess .. not understanding what is going on .. (I remember being SO proud the first time my DS1 lifted his butt in his sleep .. without waking .. and let one rip .. phew ..its SOOO much better when they know what they are doing )

My ds had the same problem, only his turned out to be far more serious he had loads of wind trapped in his bowel, he ended up in hospital and it was only after an x-ray and ultrasound that it was picked up. The doctor had to stick her finger up his bottom to release all the air and from doing this it was found he has a small rectum and colon. This was picked up at 6 weeks. Everything has gotten better as he grows, its just something we have to watch. If your bub seems to be in pain please get it checked out by a Dr. as it could be disguising something else.

Laying him on his belly across your lap might help.... otherwise Infants Friend was wonderful in our experience  Hopefully it wont take long for him to get the knack

right - shopping list;

yu yee oil
infants friend
lukewarm water (hold on - that's in the kettle)
appointment to doc if those don't work

and maybe book him into 'fart class' .. or 'anti fart class' for veve's hubby! ;)

thanks gals - it seems to weird that he has to learn how to let one go!?!
