I have a tommee tippee and if you dont have the little valve thingy in it it wont pump, or if your boob is not in properly.

You have to make sure your boob is in the whole way and that it creates a seal around the top of the cup area...otherwise there will be no suction,. Does that help?

I have the Advent one, and know that if you put the little white cap thing in it from the top rather than the bottow you get absolutely no suction...not sure how similar they are though

If you are going electric, make sure the pump mimics the actual sucking a baby would do, I bought a Nuk one, it was hopeless and contributed to my mastitis, it just sucked the breast milk out, and didn't actually release the breast back into normal position during the express.

I have a "Tommie Tippee" Hand pump, it's just as good as an electric one

I have the Avent one aswell... LOVE IT!
Its been great for the times DS won't feed at all for hours and hours (yet will bottle feed  ... i hate reflux!) and for when I go to my mum's group, because there's no guarentee he'll feed properly while we're there, so I bottle feed him once a week.
It works beautifully, there's little wastage as you express straight into the bottles and once you've pulled it apart and putit back together a few times its simple. Oh, and its super easy to wash aswell.

Also make sure that the latex pluggy looking thing at the base of the handle is on tightly. and a seal is created around the entire edge.
