Hi all ,
Hoping someone might be able to answer this. Does a rather high result on the glucose challenge mean a higher probability of not passing the glucose tolerence test?

I had my challenge last week and the results were recorded as "high" at 11.6 after a non fasting 1 hour post 50ml glucose drink. The test was done early morning and all I had had since dinner the night before was a cup of decaf coffee.

I am now booked in for the challenge this Friday but wondered if your odds of diabetes increase in proportion to a higher GC result.

I'm trying not to worry but its hard. On the plus side, I was clear with all 3 of my previous pregnancies but on the minus side I am now over 40, erm- larger than I would like to be, and with a strong (immediate) family history of type 2 diabetes.

Any advice welcome and much appreciated.

Hi Pixietrix. The diabetes counselor i went to told me they are actually going to do away with the first challenge test because its not really that reliable and they will send all women for the tolerance test instead. It will become a one hour test instead of two. Not sure when all this is going to take place officially.
So, whilst i wouldnt worry too much about your high result, i think the other things you pointed out...age, weight, genetics, are the more likely indicators for diabetes. Lots of women fail the first test and pass the second.
I failed the first and passed the second but my result was near the cut off mark and i was refered to a diabetes counselor just as a precaution. I'm only testing twice a day at this point and my results are all good...its really not a hassle at all. I've hardly changed my diet....just eating on a more regular basis instead of haphazardly. The main reason i was sent to the counselor was because my bub is already measuring big and the OB wanted to be sure he/she doesnt get enormous!
Dont worry too much about it....its really not such a drama and many women who control their diabetes through diet and exercise end up having a healthier pregnancy. I am much more active now than i was a month ago. Good luck!

Hi there,

I'm not sure about the probability of passing one test and failing the other but I have heard of alot of girls who fail the first but are fine on the GTT test.

I failed both but only just (got a result of 8.2 on the GTT). I have obviously been diagnosed with GD and have been monitoring blood sugars ever since. I'm diet controlled and have managed to avoid insulin so far.

All I can say is that it's better to know than to not know for the bub's sake. Although it can be tricky at times (bring on a donut!!) I'm definitely eating really well and wont have gained much weight after the birth! :yelclap: unlike my 1st pregnancy where I gained 22kgs...!

I was not overweight to begin this time around with however I have a very strong family history of both type 1 and 2 diabetes...so it was going to get me eventually!

Good luck with your test and don't be afraid of the results either way. Its all manageable when you know what you're dealing with.

Thanks very much springlamb and sopholivia, I'll try not to get worried. As you both pointed out, even if I do have it- it can be controlled. Will let you know as the test is the day after tomorrow. I have to say this 3 day high carb diet has been making me feel quite unwell, can't wait til its over.
Cheers!

That is the bonus of it. It gets you eating right so your already ahead of the game for getting back to your pre pregnancy weight.

Even if you do have a high result in your GTT, it doesn't have to become a hugely inconvenient thing.

Having GD is a bit of a pain at the beginning, but it would surprise you how quickly testing and watching your diet - even injecting insulin if necessary, just becomes habitual and you will breeze through.

I found that being on the low GI diet, I felt a lot healthier, had a lot more energy and my c/section recoveries were very quick and uncomplicated. I know that when my diet was well controlled, other factors like high blood pressure and protein in urine were nonexistant.

I hope all goes well for you ... if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask :)
