Hi everyone

After hours and hours of research on MCNs I am still no closer to figuring out what type I need, how many, where to get them from or how to make them myself, and what is a good price for things.

I am thinking I would love to have a real go at using them for this next little one (heaps of time to think about it all thankfully) and probably have a go at making them myself.

I love the idea that they are better for bub and the environment, cost effective after time and are pretty funky looking too!

So I have sifted through most of these threads and the whole of flipping google but I thought it might be easier just to ask here and see if any of you lovely mummies can help point me in the right direction.

Do you think it would be better just to get a DIY kit to start with and see if I can actually sew it! (I am not too sure of my sewing abilities). Where would I find an easy to use relatively cheapish kit from?

Also I have an ok sewing machine, it's a brother, not too old but not a great one or anything, can I make them on a basic, non-overlocking machine?

Thanks for any help you can give and sorry for my complete lack of knowledge and million questions :)

I think our best bet would be to buy a pocket nappy, a fitted nappy and an AIO - just one of each so you can look at them and see what they're about.

When I first started I couldn't understand it all until I had a nappy in my hands and then it all clicked into place.

Thanks for that. Sounds like a sensible thing to do. Any ideas on brands or where I should get them from?

Hey there,

There's a site called buyforbaby which sells secondhand nappies, so you can give them a try on the cheap. That's what I did when I discovered MCN's to see what type I liked!

I don't have an overlocker either and while I've only made one nappy, the plain machine was fine - all I needed was straight stitch and zigzag - not too challenging even for a beginner sewing like me!

I've just ordered my first nappy specific fabric to make some covers - look out we could be on the slippery slope to a great new hobby...:D

Good luck!

i have never seen a MCN in real life but i have made over 30 pockets nappies( coz now im stuck making them for all my friends). i used the wee waka( or something like that) pattern it is just a free on line pattern. oz cloth nappy site is a great place to start with lots of free patterns and advice. and i just started with cheap spotlight stuff til i got the hang of sewing.... coz i have not sewed since high school( and that is a few years ago now)

im not sure who does kits but i do know that Bubba Earth are a very helpful company- on saturday in the wee hours of the morning i placed an order and forgot to order the hook part of the hook and loop, and they tried to call me about it but i have dial up and i am always on the net so they could not get through so they were nice enough to include it just incase... NOW THAT IS GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE- there prices are very reasonable and so is delivery at a flat rate of $5- i just wish they stocked bamboo fleece

any way if you ever need any advice there is usually someone around on this forum, and just a quick warning...Trish

Awww - thanks! It's a family name.

I used the wee weka pattern too (like Trish), it was nice and easy to follow. I also found the elastic tutorial on the Hub really, really helpful!

Good luck - look forward to seeing/hearing how you go!

sugesstions of nappy brands:

Green kids OSFM Pockets

Itti Bitti Dlish AIO and Snap in Ones/ AI2's

Baby Beehinds Bamboo Fitted Nappies, I like their wool covers too, and their PUL aren't too shabby either.

Then you will need a night time nappy, Which can prove to be quite hard to get a hold of. Itti Bitti Should be releasing their night nappy soon, which i have seen in person and looks fantastic, CANT WAIT to get a hold of one!

Hope that Helped
