Hi everyone
I have decided to bottle feed bubs from the start and have chosen my formula and have got the sterilizer etc but I was just wondering your thoughts on the best way to make up the bottles...
do you boil the water in the kettle or on the stove or in the microwave...
and do you boil alot of water at once and fill the bottles and put them in the fridge ready to mix with the formula...?
thanks for your help - i still have 11 weeks to go but have been thinking about all of this stuff for the last few weeks so anything you can tell me will be fantastic :smiliedance:
I boil the water in the kettle, steralize bottles in microwave, and fill with required water then refridgerate until needed the I heat the water in the microwave and then add the formula that way its fresh and I'm not heating the milk (IYKWIM?)
I only make up enough for 24hrs.

When I was formula feeding my little one, I used to boil the water in the jug, fill up the bottles with the required amount and store them in the fridge, when I needed one, I heated up the water, (I used a microwave, but its safer to use boiling water to heat), then poured in the formula. A CHN told me that water can safely be kept in the fridge for 24 hours for new babies. Hope this helps a bit! Good luck with it all!
I do bottles like this
- boil water in kettle
- Steralize bottles in microwave
- Fill bottles to required amount and leave them on the bench ( takes less to heat them )
- Add formula when needed
- If you need to heat them ( Ds drunk his at room temp) poor boiled water in a jug or large mug until milk is the require temp.
It is fine to heat the water in the microwave. They only say it isn't safe to heat babies bottles in microwave cos alot of people don't shake it properly and test it resulting in burning baby's throat and mouth. But if you test it and shake it properly (which you have to in order to mix the formula) you won't have a problem.

We used to make our bottles as we went so we would always make sure the kettle was full of boiled water so that all we had to do was switch it on to warm it up. Didnt take us too long to work out the right temp by holding our hand to the side then switching it off when just right.
Otherwise for overnite i was naughty & made bottles up 2 usually the first was made with boiling water then put into a thermo mug with boiling water so that in 3hrs it was room temp for bubs otherwise it meant me having to stumble around in the dark to get downstairs & when i was as sore as i was it took too long next time i shall invest in a bottle warmer hehe makes the 3am feed much easier. The second i put into the fridge so it could be heated by DP at 6am for him to feed bubs.
When bubs was older & no longer fed through the nite i would just make up one bottle & keep it in the fridge for the 5am feed otherwise sticking to what i said first.
Makes life easier especially when i had a bubs who refused to wait in the mornings for me to fumble around half asleep to make one up.

We sterilise the bottles in the microwave (we use the PUR self sterilising ones), then fill then up with required amount of water and store in the fridge until needed. Then we just put a bottle in the microwave ( at the moment its 50 secs for 200ml) to heat, add formula, shake and feed! We've gotten to know now by just holding the bottle, if it's too warm. When all 4 bottles have been used, we resterilise them all together and go again.
We bought a formula divider container and filled it up at night with the right amount of scoops, then when bub woke up for night feed and we were still half asleep (LOL) we just had to dump the already measured formula into the bottle.
Do you know what I mean about the formula divider container? I'm not very good at explaining things..........

yeah our first one was $2 from the $2 shop or something and we thought we'd put it through the dishwasher to sterilise it. Bad idea  the container melted but the lid was fine
Hello,
I'm going against the grain here, but with ds#1 I boiled the bottles, teats and water. Then made all the bottles(with formula) I would need for the day and popped them in the fridge. I did have a bottle warmer at home and I just found it easier with bubs on hip to get the premade bottle out and straight into the warmer.
Worked for me and I will do the same this time if needed. :fingerscrossed:
I started of sterilizing using the m1lton tablets but that got all too difficult, constantly changing the solution etc. I bought a microwave sterilzer for $16 & havent looked back - its much easier.
DS is currently having 4 bottles a day. I fill up enough bottles for a day in the morning, then when it is feeding time I tip out a little & add boiling water. For 180mls, I use 150ml room temp water & 30ml boiling water & this gets the temp just right. I then add the formula, also using a divided container and we are good to go!
I ditched the Milton after about a week DS got thrush from it.

When Ds was in the childrens hospital they told us they no longer use Milton for that reason
Here is my 2 cents worth....
At night after dinner I:
*Boil water in the jug. (Nobody is allowed tea or coffee until I say so :D)
*Wash bottles and pack steriliser.
*Re-boil water in the jug - I do it twice cause our kettle is really quick and you are supposed to boil for 5 mins. Prob not necessary, but it takes hardly any effort. Just got to remember to do it.
*Steam sterilised bottle, teats, knife etc..
*When the water is cool enough so I don't scald my fingers holding the bottles, but still very warm I make up bottles with the formula for the next day and store in the fridge.
* Heat when required by standing in a large mug of boiling water (poured from the kettle.)

dont worry... I do this too! I LOVE THE WARMER! Its a life saver... only thing I do different is have the tomee tippee electric sterliser....
I have even thought that washing the bottles in hot soapy water and rinsing them with boiled water (to make sure the suds are off) and then letting the bottles dry in the sun (my kitchen get full glorious sun in the morning) will be enough. Any thoughts?:detective:
i spoke with the nurse from cyh about sterlising bottles and she was saying after the age of 6mth just washing them in hot soapy water and rinsing is enough...
otherwise if we are too strict on sterlising everything then it breeds super bugs and children will never build up an immunse system....
also 2 very expensive well known private maternity hospitals dont believe in stelising they just wash dummies and bottles in soap and water....

i never actaully got to make a bottle for my DS till he was 7 days old as he ahd health problems and was in SCN and had a drip in to kepp from beign dehyradted and then it was switched to a feeding tube:( but i made them the ay the nurses showed. boil water in the kettle, then add the scoops of powder, give it a shake to mix and then test it then get cool water to cool it down if needed.
thats how i been doing it for ages but now DS is cutting down on his bottles and likes them cold:laughing:
