Ok the other day my SIL said that she was told not to use any baby bath or soap on baby in the begining as they really don't get dirty. Also she said that J&J baby products are to harsh to use on baby's delicate skin.

Now my mother disputes all this infatically (sp?) I am not sure if this is just American vs Australian ideals or is it just 30yrs worth of sensitive baby skin and the time passed has taught us not to do this?

What did you do? How long ago was this?

I just used sorbolene cream in the bath with Vallerie. As she got a little older (ie big enough to go in the big bath) I put bubble bath in there. I never bought the J&J stuff because they just seem so expensive!

I bathed DD1 in J&J from birth but had to swith to just sorbelene cream as her skin was really dry (that's a diff story... anyhoo...) I bath Kailah in J&J but ran out this week and am currently using Curash baby bath. I don't really see the harm in it. I know that you can just bath them in plain water but I like the smell of the baby baths...mmmmm...makes them smell very yummy!
It's a personal thing I think. I'm sure there will be many opinions on this.
If your baby has a reaction to a particular product don't use it.. simple!

Hi.... i have heard similar things about J & J products, my son is 3 weeks old and i have been using Aromababy pure bath wash in his bath, which is a more natural based product which doesn't have lots of chemicals. It is really nice...as is the Aromababy powder....smells heavenly!!:)

We've always used J&J Bedtime Bath - it smells divine and we have never had a problem with bubs skin.

j&j products lol sorry but the 3 hospitals i had my bubs in and the one i am going to for the next bub (same as our 3rd) all used j&j baby wash products in the pink/ purple container cannot remember the name but will find it for you. they were never harsh on our kids skin etc and the baby soap is fine too my 2nd child gets bad eczema (she is nearly 5) and i use the j& j products in the bath with them still as it is a lot more sensitive to their skin as there isnt so much added to them. so i would highly doubt them being harsh as we nevber had probs and neither did any of my friends

We tried J&J products...I wouldn't recommend them for a newborn. We have used Alpha Keri or QV products on K since he was 2 months old and before that, we just used water.

OK Eliza is 12 days old and she has had 3 baths and only yesterday did we put in some J&J milk bath they told me at the bath class not to use anything on their skin the first week or two so their natural oils could establish after her bath we covered her in shea butter as her skin has been peeling..common in newborns as they are drying out after being in fluid all that time!

I use amo-lin shampoo for her hair seemed very gentle

and afterwards she smelled devine and slept the entire night lol :D

I have used J+J bedtime bath on DD since she was about a week old, just a tiny bit. I have never had any probs with it. I do think there isn't much point adding anything to water when they are so young unless you just want them to smell nice (thats why i used it).

When they get a little older you defo need soap because they get so dirty, but on a really young bub, I think it's prob just a waste of money.

Sorry to go off topic but DM I cant get over how cute Eliza is!:hugs:

Until my dd was 2 wks old we only used water on her and then massaged her with some oil. Since then we've used "perfect potion" baby bath wash on her up until about 3 wks ago. Now that she is older (11mo) we use j&j bath wash and we don't have a problem with it. But I still use the perfect potion baby massage oil to keep her skin nice and soft after her baths.

All the products are a little expensive, but being our first bub we tend to splurge a little, and I just felt that I wanted to give her skin the best possible start. (Don't know how much the products will have to do with it)

Also - when she was just 4wks old I did trial her on some j&j bath wash for about 2 days, and I noticed her skin become quite dry and red and blotchy, so from then on I stuck with the perfect potion stuff.

Sorry to woffle :ecomcity:

DM I must say that Eliza looks just divine.

We were told by the hospital midwives not to use soaps on our newborns, just some sorbolene in the bath. I think I did this the whole time they were in the baby bath.

DD1 (4 yo) has dry skin so I still don't use any soap in her bath, just a bath oil and a washer to give her a good scrub, she still comes up clean.

Cheers

Ive used J&J because i was given a bucketload of the products when Mary was born who is now nearly 5 months old. So far it has been good, she has had a patch or so of dry skin on her cheek but i use dermaveen for that. (the one for kids)

It all depends on the bub in question and personal choice. Some bubs are fine with any product, some react to almost all products.

They use J+J products in hospitals even on premmie bubs, my son was still 34 weeks gestation (3 weeks old) when he had his first bath and that was with jj products and no problems whatsoever.

DD is okay with JJ products now but as a younger bub it would dry her skin out quite a lot!

Some of the chemicals they use in personal care products in general are pretty nasty, in adults and childrens products. When I read the details on the chemicals they use in wipes, I stopped using them immediately and now only use face washers and water.

It's not so much an instant reaction with a lot of these chemicals, but ongoing use which can cause problems, including respiratory problems etc.

The Gaia range is lovely, and I use that every few days, but otherwise it's just water. Sometimes I'll just put a drop or two of lavendar essential oil in it if DS needs some extra help settling.

If you look at the ingredients in the J&J products (and most other shampoo's and body wash creams) at the supermarket you'll find alot of little nasties in them. They say that the amounts are so small they will have no effect on our presious little babes - but what research has been done on long term effects??

I personally prefer to stay well clear of these products and use more natural products - love aromababy, but at the moment am using Julique Baby - love it, and it really is not all that expensive as the $10 bubble bath/shampoo lasts bout' 2 to 3 months with the small amt bubs needs - well worth it:D

We use J&J top-to-toe baby bath, as we were given some before bub was born and that's what they used in the hospital where we had him. Now we use both top-to-toe wash and bedtime baby bath and haven't had any trouble whatsoever. When we first brought him home, we were told by the midwives to only bath him two to three times a week so that the water and bath products didn't dry his skin out, so for the first month or so, we didn't bath him every day. But we still used the baby wash in his bath then.

So far, we haven't had any trouble with it at all, but (and maybe I'm a little laid back about it in other people's opinions) I tend to think that if J&J products were harmful to bubs, then they wouldn't have been approved for human use and that the J&J company would have gone out of business ages ago IMO.

And besides that, they smell absolutely beautiful :D

P.S. Hope my opinion doesn't offend anyone, I don't mean it to and sorry if it does :o

my DS used J&J products while in SCN and we used them when he came home but had to stop when he developed eczema on his face quiet badly and then got a bad case of cradle cap. but now i use them all the time :) DS's first bath i remember was done at 1 day old and he had just water nothing else in the bath. but the next day he was down in SCN and they used J&J stuff.

I have been told, by a VERY experienced child car eworker not to EVER use bubble bath in babies baths... this can interfere with acidity levels in the child's lower regions. Just thought i'd share the cautionary information.

I've used the jj bedtime bath since Senna was born it was what they used in the hospital, and have had no issues. Have just swapped to the new Huggies bath and body wash lavender and chamomile, as well as the lotion for massage after bath, they smell devine and the lotion is soooo silky we love it:D
