View Full Version : Cold and Flu meds while breastfeeding?
I know you shouldn't take cold and flu meds when you are pregnant but it doesn't say anything about breastfeeding on the box.
So.... is it ok to take if you are breastfeeding tho?

I got hit with a really bad cold a few weeks after DS was born, and the chemist recommended Codral Cold & Flu tablets. They cleared my head up brilliantly and didn't affect DS at all.
Some cold and flu meds can dry up your milk so do seek medical advice before taking anything.

Most cold and flu tabs have pseudoephadrine - which is a BIG no-no when breastfeeding and through pregnancy.
Your better off sticking with panadol and increase your garlic, lemon, manuka honey and water intake.
I hope you get better soon!!

Really? That surprises me that a pharmacist would recommend something like that...
Just looked at the Codral Cold and Flu box and yes it does contain pseudoephedrine.
Guess I might have to give it a miss because I don't want my milk supply to dry up - it's already dropped because I am sick :(
Just got the usual blocked/runny nose (how can it be blocked yet runny at the same time?!!? ) and sore throat/cough and when I cough it hurts my stuffed head :dizzy:
sigh.... off for lemon honey drinks and panadol then... thanks!

I was staying with mum and dad and got sick and sent dad to the chemist to find something (anything) that I could take whilst BF they said no to the cold and flu stuff but suggested the Brauer cold tablets made from natural stuff (I hopped online to check the ingredients and nothing came up as contraindicated for BF) so I took them and it seemed to help a bit (i feel that i got better quicker) along with honey and lemon drinks, wish it had of been nannas hot toddies with whiskey but not when BF (at least not at the strengh she makes them LOL)

Polaramine has no psuedo ephedrine in it and there are two doses - pink which is 6 hour and red which is 12 hour.
the doctor and chemist have both told me that I could take the lower dose polaramine once bubs was a certain size, and I can't remember how many kilos they said. I know that DS was only a couple of months at the time.
I can't believe a chemist would say yes to cold and flu tabs when you are breastfeeding  :shame:.
