Just got back from the doc... I have had this humming in my ears for about 3 weeks. In areas with alot of background noise, the humming gets so loud i cant hear someone talking to me. Doc said it could be Minenes (sp?) syndrome, or water retention. Either way no cure until after bub is born. I have been reading up on the water retention side, and they say its usually a pop in the head, not like mine where it NEVER pops.... :banghead: Its becoming rather painful as i cant hear and i am loosing balance as well. Doc suggested i be induced at 35-6 weeks (as i have a heart condition too).
Has anyone expereinced this (im 31 weeks) or whether the docs at the hospital will agree and let me be induced early....
I cant handle much more - im loosing my hearing and my mind!
Did the doctor check for an infection?
Inner ear infections often manifest in tinnitus (that infuriating humming you're experiencing) and, due to the excess fluid retained in the area, also lead to dizziness and vertigo.
I suggest you get a second opinion. I can't imagine that they can't do anything at all to ease your suffering.

The condition he would have mentioned is Meniere's disease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meniere%27s_disease), if you want to look it up.
However, sudden onset during pregnancy makes it a very unlikely diagnosis, from what I know. Far more likely to be yet another bizarre and unpleasant symptom of pregnancy - which at the very worst means it should go away again afterwards.

Here is another link to some info about Meniere's http://www.healthinsite.gov.au/expert/Meniere_s_Disease (sorry, don't know how to do the neat link like Mister Noodle). It's an Aus gov health site.

For future reference - you do it like this:

Doc checked for ear infections, but there was none.
experienceing some hearing loss, loss of balance...
The humming comes and goes - but is becoming more frequent - i spose i shouldnt have said constant.... When background noise is around the humming gets insanely loud and i get dizzy and balance issues.
Fluid retention in the ears during pregnancy usually comes with a popping sensation, yet i dont have that.
What ever the case - its insanely frustrating!

Just letting you know your'e not alone on this one. I to have been expereinceing wierd noises that drown out everyone else around me, as well as bright lights and feeling hot and dizzy. It's getting more and more frequent as my pregnancy nears the end but it is scary, and not just for me, my other half gets really scared when it happens coz he found me unconscious from one attack.

my poor mum has tinnitus/meniere's disease/vertigo so I hope to hell that's not what is happening to you because my mum has been suffering with this for over 20 years and there is no end in sight.
her doctors have swapped and changed her medication that many times that if you shook her you'd hear her rattle.
if she only had one of these problems she could probably manage it but with the 3 her life is fairly well miserable as with the vertigo part she is unable to travel for long distances in the car, with the 3 together she is unable to travel by air because it is not just worth the risk. She has dizzy spells where she collapses and is unconscious for brief periods and it takes days and days for her to get over it. She had one 3 weeks ago and and fell on her wrist but thank goodness it didn't break but it may as well of because she hasn't been able to use it since.
I hope it is only a pregnancy thing for you because it's no fun seeing what my mum has to continually go through so GOOD LUCK with it all. I'd be interested for an update after you have had the baby to see if it has gone.
