Hi
I have a 3 month old whom has pretty much been a spewer since birth. Every once in a while she would get upset but ever since she turned 3 months every arvo/night she will cry and scream for 2 to 3 hours... Has anyone else found this to happen to them.

Hi Sarah

Thanks for your post.

Spewey unsettled babies can be hard to manage can’t they? Unfortunately because each baby is different, there is not one solution which will help all babies. When a baby becomes increasingly difficult and unsettled, it’s a good idea for your gp or community health nurse to check them over. There may be a reason other than reflux for your baby to be unsettled.

If your baby does have reflux, it can sometimes improve a little by keeping your baby upright during feeds and especially after feeds for around 20 – 30 mins. You may also find you need to roll your baby from side to side when changing, rather than lifting their legs up high. If you are formula feeding, trying different formulas sometimes improves things also. This is something you may want to discuss with your health provider. Sometimes babies with reflux require medication or special diets.

Most people with a young baby really need helpful family and friends around to offer support. Remember to accept any offers of help, whether it be meals cooked by a friend, someone to do some housework for you, or someone to pick up some groceries at the supermarket for you. And rest when the baby rests – your health is important too.

Please have your little one checked out by a professional, either your gp, health nurse or paediatrician. If you find reflux is a problem for your baby, have a look at www.reflux.org.au for some more helpful hints.

All the best
