My 3rd child is 1week old today,....and he is a very sleepy baby! (both of my other children were awake from the start!),... He wakes to feed - which he does for about 40mins - then he is back to sleep for another 3-4 hours till the next feed,.. Is this normal????? Should he be more awake?

does he have a yellow tinge to his skin? jaundice can make them a bit sleepy.

Yeah,.. he had a little jaundice in hospi,... I am taking him to the Dr tomorrow to get it checked out,... should I be concerned about it tonight? (thanks Dr Shed,..you have come to my assistance twice today!:D:hugs:)

SJ, Miss K was the same - and I was worried too. Turns out she just liked her sleep (takes after her mum ;) ). At 12 months she was still sleeping about 18 hours a day.

As long as he's bright when he is awake I wouldn't stress.

All of my 4 were like this, except they only fed for 10 to 20 minutes and then slept for 3- 6 hours. I never knew any different, and I have had some friends that have had babies with very similar patterns to my babies.

Just enjoy a very settled contented baby. I know I did! :)

Lots of wet nappies? I had a sleeper too (was prem) and I unfortunately took advantage of it and she wasn't feeding enough - but that was at about 3-4 months. Some are sleeping (it's a shock!) but you are dong the right thing to check with the Dr.

Not really wet,...but there is wee in all of them,..some heavier than others... He hasn't poo-ed for 2 days,..but that is normal for BF'ing babies yeah? Even new ones?

 I can see how it would be worrying if this is your first bubs to do this.

I never even knew I had a newborn with mine. I call them freaks because really, they were unusually good. I pretty much just had the same life, except with a 15 minute feed every 3 plus hours. My 4 th baby, form the time he was born slept from 6pm until 12am, everynight like clockwork. I was bored with my babies.

It is probally the reason why I will always want more babies.....I really got to enjoy them.

I do have very 'normal' toddlers though!:p

ETA...Yes not pooing for 2 days is normal.

Pooing can be every nappy to once every 10 days (if so, stand back!!) If you can fit more feeds in, do but it's hard with a sleepy one. Others might be able to give your more up to date advice from their experience

The doc will probably take some blood and tell you if he needs lights or just the sun, hopefully just the sun :fingerscrossed:.

Happy to help. Look up 'breastfeeding jaundice' so you have more info in case they suggest something crazy like formula which will only mess with your supply and won't help anyway.

mine is like this too Jane, Eliza was also a very awake baby. I think sleepy babies are normal they do usually hibernate for a week or so!

Do you get concerned Nat? Or are you just rolling with it?

I am just going with it, as he's healthy in all ways, but if R is a little Jaundice then you might have more cause for concern.

My DD12 slept for hours on end too, from day 1 she slept from about 11pm-6am every night and then most of the day apart from feeds.
The midwife kept telling me i had to wake her in the night to feed her but i figured she would wake up if she needed feeding and she was putting on weight fine.
It was wonderful !

I have a very sleepy baby still at 3 months she sleeps 12 hours (sometimes more) a night, then has a few naps during the day BUT she is smiling and drinking lots and doing lots of wet and dirty nappies. Hunni if you are really worried get it checked out especially with the jaundice but if its not too bad and he seems happy ride it out like Pixie said. You just may be lucky and got an extremelly sleepy bear like I did
