I need to buy a mattress for DD's cot but I don't know what sort to buy. I know you can get foam ones for around $50 from places like Clark Rubber, and target has innerspring ones, but what other kindas are out there?
DD likes to sleep on her tummy, and no matter what I do she still rolls over. She usually turns her head to the side, but I have found her with her face down into the matress a few times in the last few days, she has been sleeping in the portacot thru the day so this doesn't worry me too much as her face can't really sink into the mattress.

Any help would be great :)

We asked in a baby shop the other week about mattresses as we need one too.

We have the cot Angus had as a baby and he had a foam mattress when he was a baby, so we asked about them as all the ones we saw were inner spring.

The lady said that foam is fine for a baby and the only reason there are so many inner spring cot mattresses around at the moment is because so many of the cots are convertible so people are buying them as they will last longer and be better suited to a toddler or child, with more weight on them.

Don't know that this actually answers your question but hope it's some help.

Hi a brought a mattress for my DD on Saturday from Babies Galore. Its a inner spring mattress and we paid $119 for it. They have the foam ones there also for around the $60 mark. I asked what the difference was and she said the inner sping lasts alot longer and they also breath better (reduces the risk of SIDS).
I felt both the foam and inner sping and there wasnt much difference. The foam was just a bit softer. The reason i went for the inner spring is because it will last longer... the foam ones seem to get a indentation (s/p) where bubs is sleeping.

I personally dont think there is much difference although for your bubs i would say the inner spring is the way to go as you dont know how long the foam mattress with stay firm for and if bubs is a tummy sleeper you dont want her face sinking into the foam.

I asked around too and was also told that if you just have a 'cot' then foam is fine but go for innerspring if its a cot/toddler bed as it will need to last 4-5 years compared to 1-2 with a foam mattress and the weight difference on it is huge obviously.

We have a convertible cot - so also have innerspring mattress :)

Thanks, that does help a bit.
I remember when DS was little and we were going to get a new mattress for him, ( he climbed out of the cot before we got a new mattress, so we never got one) the baby shop people told me about a breathable fibre something-or-other mattress...anyone heard of these?

I bought my cot from a local baby shop (not a chain). It's a foam mattress that's good for allergies and breathes. It's also able to be hosed-done for a wash...which is good in case I need to wash it.

It cost me about $80...so it was pretty good.

Yes, I have heard about those breathable fibre cot mattresses. Can't quite remember all the details, but do rememer they cost an arm-and-a-leg. I'm sure any babygoods shop would be able to fill you in.

Ikea sell the inner-spring mattresses for $99. That is the cheapest that I have found.
