View Full Version : Waking through the night

My 20 month old is going through a phase involving him waking maybe 4 out of 7 nights crying 'Ma, Ma, Ma' until I get there. He's usually standing in his cot. I just tell him that I'm going to put him on his pillow and tuck him in. (thats what we say when we're putting him into bed at the normal time) and he just goes back to sleep.

It's just annoying having to get up - sometimes up to 8 times in the night - especially when I have a newborn as well! This started a little bit before DS2 came along.

I know that putting him in our bed will resolve the issue short term but I refuse to let him do that - only when he's sick or for a morning cuddle.

I assumed the 'Ma' was a call for me. But he usually calls me Mum. I'm wondering if he's asking for something? I don't know what Ma could be??? Except uncle Mark:confused:

I give him water and check all the usual things like temp, nappies etc. He has no obvious signs of illness or teething... He still does it on his daycare day when he is the most tired.

Anyone got any clues and how I can get him to stop doing this?

He may well be calling out for you but just very tired at the time and says "Ma Ma Ma" instead of "mum mum".

Is he going through a clingy stage during his awake times. Sounds like he might just need reassurance that you are around (annoying when it happens 8 times in 1 night :D)

What happens if you don't go in there and just let him go for a couple of minutes?

Is it hysterical crying or just sooking/whinging?

Have you tried your partner/husband going in there to settle him off instead of you.

My husband is far too lazy to do anything practical in the middle of the night - he just puts him into bed with us and I don't get any sleep anyway.

If i leave him, it will turn into a hysterical cry.

But you know, on a couple of occasions, it appears as though he is asleep while he's doing it? Other times he is clearly awake.

He only cried out once last night which was good. Fingers crossed its just a phase that will pass very soon!

thanks.

I wish there was an easy answer... it is just so hard to know what the right thing to do is. All that you can do for now is just be consistent I guess, an pray that it will end soon. I feel your pain though
