Hi
Just wondering what contraception you would recommend? I have 2 kids and do not want anymore so would like to take something and not have to worry about getting pregnant. I dont want to take the pill because I think I will forget to take it everyday. I've heard of the thing in your arm and the needle in your bum and a few others (sorry I forgot the names of them) and want to know if there are any bad side effects of taking these. I would like to take something and not get a period again, is there any that do this?
Thanks
Natalie

Hi I dont want to get pregnant again either, but my contraception will be not having sex... HAHA, im not joking but being single its a luxury I have...
Anyhow, there is an implanon that is a littlr rod in your upper arm, This lasts for 3 years and results vary for different people. Eg i had it and got my period for 8 weeks than stopped for two and got them again for 8 weeks so had it taken out. My sister got it at the same time and hasnt had her peiods after 3 years she had it replaced with another one (a year ago) and still has had no period.
The other one I think you are talking about is depoprovera. I had this when I got pregnant with my second son, I only know one other person who has gotton pregnant on this. And I never got a period. In the 3 years I was on it. Just unfortunatly very very fertile.
There is also an iud, which I think I will get if I do decide I need contraception, these can last up to five years and are put in your uterus, or somewhere in that area.
Hope I have helped.

I had implanon (the little rod in your arm) for 2 and a half years and had it removed so we could begin TTC. I really liked it. My body took about 4 months to accept it, I had spotting etc and then didn't get a period at all. Its one of those things that you either put up with and wait for it to get better or just take it out straight away.

Hi guys - there are a couple of contraceptives out now but I think the main ones you're talking about are:
Depo Provera or Depo Ralovera Injections - these last about 3 months (unless it's changed LOL) and from what I've heard, they're pretty good.
Implanon - little rod inserted into the fleshy part of your upper arm and I'm fairly sure this one lasts for 3 years.
Mirena - which is the IUD and it is inserted into the opening of your cervix. It looks like a T and the top of the T sits against to top of your uterus, the little arms of the T block the fallopian tubes and there is a string hanging of the 'stem' of the T which hangs outside of the cervix so that when you want it removed, they just pull the string (kinda like a tampon) and the arms of the T fold up and come out. This one lasts for 5 years and it's the one I've got at the moment. It didn't hurt to get it put in coz my gynae sprayed a local anaesthetic on the cervix and I'm sure most other gynae's would do this as well.
The reason we chose to go with this one were that it only cost about $28 from the chemist, and it lasts for 5 years. The reason I chose this one over the other ones I've mentioned here, is because the other 2 as well as the pill release hormones through your blood stream and that's where you get the bad skin, the crankiness, the weight gain etc etc. Whereas with the IUD the little amount of hormones that are released are right there in the cervix already so you don't get all the nasty side effects.
As for periods, I've had the IUD for about 2 1/2 months now and still spot bleed a little, but that rights itself within 3 to 4 months apparently. It's nothing too annoying and it's possible that I may get regular periods again, or I may not have a period again until the IUD is removed.
I think it's fantastic - and so much more romantic than having to pause to put a condom on
Here's a few links to some info on Mirena

We use abstinence, works really well.
I had implannon put in about about 8 months ago and haven't stopped bleeding yet!!:banghead: :banghead: I am getting it taken out next week - I am over it!!
I know that it has different effects on different people so just because it was no good for me doesn't mean it won't be good for you. I really wish it had of worked though because it was just so easy, not having to worry about contraception for 3 years sounded great - it didn't even hurt when they put it in. It is just one of those things and you won't know until you try it.............

Thanks for the info on mirena Ange, I've been looking into getting it once bubs is born because we arent certain our family is finished yet so no snipping or tying happening... but we do want something reliable and the pill, mini-pill and deprova are all ruled out for me and I'm not game enough to try implanon given my responses to the other 3 and also the horror stories I've heard with it!
A friend of mine had implanon for a year, and had horrible headaches all the time. It wasn't till she took it out (she decided to get her tubes tied), that the headaches went away. Within days of it being removed she was back to normal, no pain.

hey i did just find this:
The second IUCD that I think is terrific is called 'Mirena'. Mirena has just come onto the PBS in Australia on 1/2/03 for contraception which means that it is the price of a regular prescription and the remaining cost of the device is covered by the government. It has been available in Australia for some years on private script for around $250 and was mainly used by women with very heavy menstrual bleeding who would have had to have a hysterectomy otherwise. The reason Mirena is so interesting is that the stem of the IUCD has a sheath of Progesterone hormone which is released into the surrounding endometrium lining the uterus. It is a very small dose and the likelihood of women getting enough in their bloodstream to get side effects is very small. The reason the Progesterone is so important is that it works to hormonally 'thin' the lining of the uterus and will drastically minimise menstrual bleeding. Often women will get irregular annoying light bleeding and spotting for the first few weeks ( up to 6 months) after having it put in but once the uterus lining gets used to the Mirena, then very light periods is the norm. This IUCD lasts for 5 years.
so it shouldnt be $200ish right??
