Mine hasn't had it but a friends child did (i wormed my kid just incase though)
Symptoms were itchy bum and loss of appetite.
You can do the "look at night with a torch" approach or check out a bowel movement to see if any are visible. A friend in Japan says they use the sticky tape test. You get some tape and put it on their anus and remove and inspect for any little white spots which are the eggs.
Honestly though if in doubt you could just worm them anyhow as it wont do any harm:)

My girlfriend commented at the Dr's once that her kids were not sleeping very well at that time. The Dr suggested a worm treatment because they may have worms and if they don't it wont do them any harm.
I worm my kids annually, not because i think they have worms but because we live in the bush and have loads of contact with animals that may not be wormed.

Thanks guys, have sent DH to get some worming treatment, just in case. DS hasn't been sleeping very well for about a week now. He is irritable and cranky, and worse at night time. He doesn't itch his bottom and isn't off food. He did a poo about an hour ago and had lots of cotton' like stringy bits in it, so I googled and found info on Threadworm. Could these stringy bits be the worms? There are a lot of them, so I am really worried :(.
ETA: We only have an outside dog, who is regularly wormed. I have also read Threadworm is not contracted through animals. How do children get Threadworm?

There's a herbal worming tablet for kids available through health food shops called VitaKlenz and it really can't hurt to worm them anyway. We all get wormed every 6 months, we have an inside dog but I've been told that animals and humans can't pass worms on to one another as they are different  but we all get wormed at the same time anyway. Just to make sure
I don't know what to look for other than hyperactivity, restlessness, eating lots of food and not gaining weight, scratching their bum. We haven't actually had it but I like to stay wormed anyway.

Yes the little really fine thread things would be the worms.
Kids get worms *usually* from other kids. They can be present on lots of surfaces so it's important you now worm your whole family and wipe down everything you can (wash toys etc).
If your son is in daycare/school you should let them know he's been treated so that other parents can treat their children too.

Thankyou Becsmum, I thought they might have been :(. Can these have done any damage to my son? I haven't noticed them until now, and he hasn't been himself for about a week now. I feel like a horrible mother.
And I will be sure to let his daycare know!
Thanks :).

I got some "special chockies" tonight, and the lady at the chemist said he shouldn't have threadworms if he isn't using toilets . I thought they could get them from toys, surfaces etc too??
I guess there's still no harm giving them to him in the morning, was just a tad confused LOL :).
