View Full Version : I'm confused - solids & breastfeeding

Angus is 6 months old and has been on solids for almost 3 weeks. He is breastfed every two hours (he has done this since 4 weeks of age - he keeps me on my toes!!) and is STILL having 6 feeds per day.

We saw our CHN yesterday and spoke about feeding solids whilst breastfeeding, and she basically said that Angus' diet should now be more about consuming food rather than just breastmilk. Ok, so how do I continue breastfeeding and introducing him to 2 & 3 solid meals per day?

I'm going back to work 3 days per week in September and plan to breastfeed in the morning and evening. The CHN says he will most likely be on 3-4 feeds per day by then, and could just send a bottle and some food with him to daycare.

I am confused . Should I be starting to drop a b/f, replace it with solids so he will be used to it by the time he goes to daycare? I thought that feeding solids should COMPLIMENT rather than REPLACE breastfeeding, but the CHN gave me the impression that Angus will be having less milk feeds soon, and the best way to do this is to drop feeds and replace them with solids. I've always offered boob before solids and will today start Angus on two solid meals per day.

So how do I best keep breastfeeding and get the solids happening well in preparation for Angus starting daycare in September? Do I drop feeds and replace with solids or keep b/f on demand and complementing with solids?

It would be great to not have to keep b/f every two hours and 6 times a day until I go back to work!! I am a bit exhausted by it!!!

Sorry to :ecomcity::ecomcity:, but hope some BubHubbers may be able to help me out.

Your CHN is mistaken. At this stage, solids is about experimentation with taste and texture, and should not be relied on for nutritional content at all. Your baby still gets MOST of his nutritional requirements from milk until at least 12 months of age, after THAT food becomes more important.

Angus will drop feeds at his own rate.

I didn't start DD onto 3 meals until she was 7 and a half months

I would just follow you ds lead. A typical day for my DD is 7am breast feed, 8am breakfast. 9am nap. 11am feed. Midday lunch. 1pm Nap.
3pm Feed, but sometimes she isn't interested. 5.30 Dinner. 6.30 bath 7pm feed and bedtime.

Not sure if I have helped much.. You are doing a great job! I am sure someone will be along shortly to help you out more in regards to feeding and returning to work.

:iagree:

Have you tried expressing ?

Cause if possible try building up a stash now for when you go back to work this way you should be able to keep up with him while you are away at work.

All that matters is bubs is happy ... Which is sounds like he is ! So keep doing what you are already doing & go from there !
