View Full Version : choosing a boys name is more difficult
Hi we are tyring to pick a name for "the bump" and have narrowed it down to one of a few girls names, but somehow can't find any boys names we both agree on - why is it so much more difficult?
Girls choices are
Abbey
Amber
Chloe
Nina
Sophie
Erin
Boys names so far....
possible Ethan but even that's a bit to like "oh I named my bub after Ethan Hawke- the filmstar" and I'm not even sure I like that one anymore.
Anybody fancy helping out, middle initial will be "R" and Surname "S". so obviously we don't want initials ARS!!

Hi Nicki
I know how hard it can be to choose boys names, it gets even harder the second tiume when you already have a girls name picked out frim the last time and need to find another boys name. We named our first son Logan Micheal Christian and we are having another boy so i think so have settled on Chase Ashton Lucas. both boys have 2 middle names becuase i do.
I hope this helps.
Kristen
Hi Nicki,
I agree on ARS, but would watch out for IRS and ORS (maybe horsey?) if I were you ;) . I think a strong consonant makes a good initial for a boy, like "K", "J", "M" and "B"? I don't know if that matches any thoughts you have but if you do choose an initial first then those baby name websites can provide the rest sometimes :)

I have just realised that calling my second son what we want is going to leave him with the initials CALF....... I know thats not that bad but hopefully it wont be something he will hate us for in the future.

I love the name Declan! always wanted this for a boy but had 2 girls instead. I think Ethan is okay but very popular now.
i actually found it easier to think of boys names, i could never think of any girls names that i really loved and when i found out i was actually having a girl it wasnt till a few wks before she was born that i was able to come up with some girls names that i loved, i knew from the beginning though that if she was a boy she would have been Flynn
hi Dessertres, sorry i think i just spelled that horribly wrong.... i wouldn't worry too much about the initials calf, my full name is melanie alison desmond leaving me with m.a.d. something i was always accused of being! :p
also being a teacher makes it really easy to knock names off the list... i've had some students who were real horrors so don't want their names!
Hi Nicki,
Totallly sympathise with you, I am 38 weeks at moment & still have not decided on a boys name. If the bump is a boy, we are in trouble. I have a book at home with 94,000 names, it has just confused the matter to no end.
I liked Dylan for a quiet a few weeks then I went completely off it, I think I like Joshua now & my hubby likes Jackson (I would prefer just jack) what do you all think?
I like the name Ethan. Speaking from experience, having a popular name (Kylie) has had absolutely no ill effects on me, well at least that is how I have justified my decision to call our bump "Ella" if it is a girl, as this name is becoming reasonably common.

Hi guys
I am pregnant with second and having boy name issues. Our son (14 mths) is Samuel James and i think we have decided on Ethan also for this bub (if its a boy) but we are not 100% sure, i like Jacob (Jake) too but our nephew is Jack so i think too similar.
Hopefully bub will be a girl because we are 100% sure on Charlotte Isobel :)
Good luck to all

Hi all
I'm due in 15 weeks (2nd-3rd week of Sept). My hubby and I can only really agree on 1 boys name, but I'm not 100% sure if I want it, it's Austin Matthew. Matthew is my hubbys name so I would like it for the middle name, and then there's Austin? hmmmmm.......... I do like it but it seems as though I still need to look for something that could be better?? Hubby likes Liam, but Liam has never been a name I have liked...sounds too Irish/British for me (I'm from N. America). I know it's popular here in Australia, but I just don't like it. Any suggestions on a name that would go with Matthew for a middle name?
if we have a girl, her name will be Katelyn. Either Katelyn Elizabeth, Katelyn Jayne, or Katelyn Jade.
Let me know if you have any ideas!
Lewis, Lucas are a couple I like though don't suit our chosen middle and surname. I loved Anthony, Blair and Drew but hubby was not interested in those so we have pretty much settled on Fraser or Frazer if we have a boy, but as I'm only at 21-22 weeks I might change my mind yet.
Good luck
Nicki
PS I like what you've chosen too

Hi Brenny,
Can I make a suggestion to you? Your hubby's middle name is a great thing to use, we're doing that when we eventually have a boy (Connor Andrew is our boys name) & (20 weeks preg with 3rd girl!!) It's only my opinion and I hope I don't offend you - when I saw the name Austin I first thought of Days of Our Lives (& hubby thought of Austin Powers) - but then again - I didn't think "British" when I saw the name Liam, so I think it really depends on your association with the name. Some other suggestions for Matthew could be Oliver, Connor, Alexander, Dominic, Spencer, Sebastian, Anthony, Issac, Harrison. Another really nice combo for your girls name could be Katelyn Grace, increasingly popular, (we have Chelsea Grace) but very timeless as well.
Really not sure what type of names you like but hope these help you!
Anna
P.S. Be careful with choosing a first name that ends in the same letter as the middle name starts with - sometimes it can just blend in and sound like 1 name if you're using the name in full (e.g Liam Matthew)
Hi
I am only 5wks pregnant with my second and my partner nad i have already made a short list of names.
For a Boy: Kaleb Tyler or Beau with middle names possibly one of the left overs or Tony as that is my dads name.
For a Girl: Aiesha or Bella, no real ideas for a middle name but i like traditional names for middle names, my daughter is Mikayla Rose which i think sounds nice.
Hi, I have two boys- Declan James and Connor Austin (Austin is my maiden name) and we are expecting our third boy- Brendan Vincent. It is sooooo hard coming up with another boys name, as we used our favourites on the first two! We eventually decided to name no 3 after my dad and luckily, we both love his name!

Hi all
I found a great website while I was looking for unusual girl's names for our second bub. www.babynames.com (http://www.babynames.com). There are more names here than you can poke a stick at and you can scroll through alphabetically where they will list male, female and either. They are also listed by category ... like shakespeare, tolkien, celtic ...
Good luck!

I know how hard it is to decide on a boys name. When we had our son 5 months ago we had no idea what we were going to name him. We went through baby name books and just nothing appealed to us. My husband out of the blue came up with Mattias...pronounced Ma tie as. I wasn't sure at first but I really liked it after I thought about it for a bit and I love that it is not a very common name. The only thing I might have changed is the spelling as no one ever gets the pronounciation right
Some other boys names that I like are: Ben, Landon, Simon, Jack, Dominic, Mason, Blake and Donovan.
Good luck deciding on a name :D
Well its another boy for me so my girls name is out the door :o
I think we still like Ethan best but want to make really sure before we decide 100%.
Such a struggle.......

Not preg yet but have thought about a few names. I have been keeping my favorite name very quiet as i have a couple of friends that have beaten me to the baby game and i dont want them "stealing" my name ;) ! I dont mind letting you all know though! I like for a boy Nate or Brock. Nate especially is a little different but not completely off the wall!
All the best for you all and your bubbas, i hope to join you all soon.

P.S. Dont tell anyone!!

Boys names are so much more difficult. We are due in 7 weeks and we have had our girls names (2 combinations in case the baby doesnt look like our first choice) picked out for ages, but the boys... we have come up with Riley Carrum (the Carrum was also my grandfathers middle name and is a bit different. Our "back up" name is Connor Henry (Henry being my grand dads first name). My only problem with connor is that i do not want that to be shortened to Con, i dont like that at all. The girls names that we have picked out are Ashlea Kianna and Maddison Olivia. People have said (as "people" tend to do) that if you are struggling to come up with a name for a certain sex then you probably arent having a baby of that sex, but who knows! I have thought most of the pregnancy that we are having a girl, but lately i have been thinking that bub is a boy. Cant wait to find out!
Ethan was on our list as well as Lachlan, alexander, Thomas, Flynn, Hayden.
Good luck!

Hi all,I am TTC and find that for so long now there has been heaps of boys names i like and not many girls.
For boys there is:
Hamish
Kyran
Noah
Oliver
,all hot contenders, I also have a cousin that was going to be Kayden but big brother was Kyran and mum wanted different initials so went with Quaid.
Desertress have you thought of swapping it around to Chase Lucas Ashton,I thought it still sounded very nice this way and would give you CLAF instead.
Cheers all.Happy name hunting.
Hi,
Boys names are certainly more difficult to choose. We found out that we are having a boy. The only name so far that we both agree on is Ty. I have only met one other person in my life with this name, so I like the fact that there isn't many around! I think if it ends up being Ty he will get nick named Tyger when he is little, I think it is cute. What do others think. The other name I like is Ashley. :)

Hi coopsntilly,
I noticed your sons name was Cooper James which I love as its my nephews name too.He gets C.J for short which I think is really cute too- thats another thing do people out there consider possible nicknames when they choose their baby's name? as I didnt when we decided on Orlando for our son. My family wanted to shorten his name to Ollie but I dont like it, how do you tell people to just call him Orlando without sounding pompish?

Hey :)
I feel for you there! We have had the same sort of problem with our son Andrew. People just keep wanting to call him Andy - especially my brother in law. It drives me nuts! Hubby and I don't like to get uppity about it, but we definitely make a point of talking about our son AS Andrew in front of BIL. I figured he would cotton on - his daughters name is Samantha and they HATE people calling her Sam. So whenever he calls our son Andy, we refer to his daughter as Sam and that seems to make it click!! That way i feel we are making it known that we want him called Andrew, without getting into a fight about it. We fully realise that as he gets older he may actually want to be called Andy, but in the meantime, he is our Andrew!
We did actually consider nicknames when we were choosing baby names - we named our son Andrew Jason so he had a few choices for nicknames...ie Andy, Drew or AJ. When he gets older he can decide and we'll be quite happy for him to have that choice!
hi orlandos mum, i didnt realise that coopers initials were CJ till a few mths later and i agree it is pretty cute, but he doesnt get called that, if we do shorten his name its usually to coops or coopy. if you call your son orlando all the time most people will get the hint, and i found with thomas that if people did call him tom i would just say something like 'oh we only call him thomas so i dont think that he would respond to tom, he wouldnt realise that that is his name.

kelly :)
We couldn't agree on a boy's name either. We had 4 girls names picked out that we both loved, but that wasn't going to help as we knew we were having a boy. I
I wanted Jakeb or Jaxon.
Hubby wanted Marlin. But, there was no way my son was going to be called a fish!! (no offence)
We both liked Sam, but that is what we called our dog.
We finally agreed on Ethan.
I like Irish boys names such as
Aidan
Ronan
Declan
Malachi (pronounce Mala-key)
