A friend of mine was wondering how long she should wait after a glass of wine before bf her 6week old?

How much should she express and toss?
Her baby is partly formula fed.

I suggested feeding bub right before the drink, expressing and tossing the next feed and substituting with a pre-alcohol expressed bf or formula...and not bf for four hours. Anyone have a better idea? tia

Im pretty sure you dont have to toss the next feed, just wait the reccomended time - 2 hours per drink. Im not 100% sure on that though.

You can get milkscreen tests that test your breastmilk for alcohol.

Thanks tixta for your reply...I'll pass it on...2hours is much less time than I would have thought

I'm pretty sure that the alcohol stays in your milk for the same amount of time that it stays in your blood and that you would follow the same guidelines as you would if you were driving. So if your BA is higher than 0.05 then you wouldn't feed.

Hi, I used the milk screen to check and after one drink I had to wait 2hrs until the milk was alcohol free. And yes it is like the blood alcohol, the more you drink the longer the wait. I would suggest she gets the milkscreen and does her own tests so she is comfortable with how long she waits. Also I expressed 10-20mls after each feed for a few days and put it all together (once cold) and now have 6 feeds in the freezer which gives me the option of dumping a feed. Enjoy.

I like to have a glass of wine every now and again and I was worried about the alcohol transferring to DD. I was told that if you're right to drive, then you're right to feed. (under 0.05 then you can BF). I don't BF straight after a drink, but sometimes its about an hour later. The milk that she is drinking then is already made and stored, and as long as you're not continuously drinking so that new milk produced is alcoholic then you should be fine. Hope my info is partly correct.
Wouldn't advise BF after tequila shots, bubs might not appreciate being drunk!!
