weve had 2 lots of puppies so happy to help with any advice. some things i remember are:

a whelping box can be anything that will keep the puppies in, gives space for when mum has to feed etc for example you could use a playpen lined with black plastic, cover the ground with a few layers of newspaper and put some old blankets in a corner. its important for her to feel safe and cosy in there. she should be able to climb out when she wants to but keep the puppies in at the same time. the puppies will poo and pee everywhere so starting piling up the old newspapers as you will be changing them everyday at least!

it was amazing to watch the puppies being born. each is born in its own little sac which the mother licks til it breaks. she then licks all the goo off them and eats the sac which is soooo grosssssssss! the puppies cant see at all so we had to help them find the nipple to feed initially otherwise they would just push each other off. and just make sure while she is licking one and birthing another that she doesnt sit on any of the puppies haha

its a pretty natural process for dogs and they dont need much guidance really.

ok hears our problem we went to the vet yesturday he said she due on 4th july the problem is the father is a labrodor an the mother is a chuaua corss pomeranian. now we have a few options
1: book her in for a csection on the 3rd july $800
2 let her try if there is a problem rush her to murdoch if its during the day emergency 1000 at night 1600

i will spend a million dollars on my dog to save her life but the problem is paying that up front an only having under 3 weeks to get it together. i think we should try but the vet told me if i dont have the money up front for an emergency they will turn me away. this was not planed an silly me should have reaserched it i never thought it was posible for a 8month old lab to breed with a chuaua. if we let her try should i get a ultra sound done to see how many pups so i no how many to expect. 1 vet told us the more she has the better because theyll be smaller an one vet told us not true i have spoken to so many vets its crazy.

You shouldn't have to pay anything upfront, surely your vet will have a payment plan. Ours certainly go out of their way to help if you don't have enough money.

I'd go with option 1 and ask if you can put a downpayment and pay it off.
I'd also be booking her in for desexing asap too.

If you end up trying to find them homes, please don't advertise them as bloody labra-huahuas or something ridiculous like that. ;)

this is just not true at all... our dog got hit by a car while my husband was out jogging at night (i did tell him to put the dogs on leads but men never listen!) we had to rush him to the emergency vet and it cost us $2000 as he needed metal plates and screws in his leg. they put us on a simple payment plan of $50 a week and were very understanding. they really do not expect you to pay upfront for an emergency. if i were you i would get yourself another vet!

one of our other dogs had lymphoma cancer and same thing, they put everything on a payment plan for us. when he passed away they even credited our account for the medication that didnt get used.

i would also go with option one just to save yourself the stress incase the puppies are too large and just make some calls for a vet who has a payment plan system.

i think well go with option 1 an she will be desexed while having the c section. theres no way it will happen again.

It all depends on where you go for the emergency, murdoch will expect payment generally before the pet goes home if you go witlh your local vet they may let you pay it off, I believe balcatta emergency centre is the same, make sure the mum is on a good quality dog food as this will be very draining on her, I would even look at putting her on a puppy biscuit, I would probably go with an elective caesar as it is a pretty much cetainty she will need a caesar if the dad is a labrador, I am not sure where to get whelping boxes as my friend who breds dogs built her own, this will be an expensive exercise as you will ahve to feed, worm and vaccinate the puppies, so it will not just be the cost of the caesar that you have to worry about, good luck

yep balcatta will let you put it all on a payment plan - they are the vet that we have used. they are very good there.

balcatta must have changed there policy, when i was nursing a few years ago you had to pay before taking the pet home if you are not an existing client.

yea i guess they must have, buddy recently had a bone stuck in his throat and they let us take him home on a payment plan. he had to stay overnight for surgery tho but was fine the next day.

thats good to hear there was nothing worse than having to tell people"keep an eye on him and if he gets worse take him to balcatta, but you will ahve to apy before yout ake him home" there is nothing worse than having to bring up money when all they are worried about is there pet it makes the industry seem very uncaring, i do understand the vets position they are a business at the end of the day but i am glad they are now allowing payment plans.

yea that would suck, plus they would have charged extra just to keep the animal until you paid too!!

Just thought I would pop in and mention that we used to(when I was a kid) have a toy poodle (thats the smallest type) and she mated with a border collie. She birthed 4 puppies successfully.

I think I would probably go for the c-section too though as its probably not worth the risk.
