View Full Version : Which birth books are you reading?
I spent all my time with babies one and two reading about the pregnancy. I reckon I am an old hand at that now, so this time I intend to be fully savvy on the birth!
i have read a few books - currently trying to digest Silent Knife, it is easy to read and quite informative.
I have also got the waterbirth book (Janet Balaskas) and birth your way (Sheila Kitzinger).
What are you reading and what do you think of it?

Having an elective this time due to prior complications, so am not reading up about birth this time.
However, I have been reading Your Baby Month by Month (http://www.dorlingkindersley-uk.co.uk/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,9781405318082,00.html)by Su Laurent...gives great tips & advice on baby development from birth-2 years + has a really good section on health concerns. I like it...it's easy to read, very informative & I've been referring to it quite a bit recently.
I also ordered some books from Amazon a few days ago & am eagerly waiting for them to arrive. The ones pertaining to babies were A Child is Born (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0385337558) by Lennart Nilsson & From Conception to Birth: A Life Unfolds (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0385503180) by Alexander Tsiaras. They both feature photos of the unborn baby week by week through the pregnancy. Because I'm feeling a bit detached from this bub, I wanted to have something I could look at & think..."that's what bubs looks like now."
One book I would not recommend is What to Expect When You're Expecting unless you want to spend your entire pregnancy worrying over every single niggle & pain. It has far to much detail on what can go wrong during pregnancy. Yes, it's important to realise when something is wrong...but not to the point where you worry needlessly during the entire pregnancy. I can't even find my copy any more...I suspect I got rid of it.

My Mum bought me a Johnson & Johnson book of Mother & Baby Care in a charity shop for £1. It's fab and it has a section on common child illnesses with pictures and symptons which I still refer to for DS who's 5yrs old.
DS likes looking through it too so he already knows where babies come from.

I've read one Sheila Kitzinger book, and it was ok...and one ridiculous homebirthing book by some guy in America, and he's all natural therapy and stuff which is what I'm after, but the amount of herbal medication he says we should take is insane!!!
Ask your LMC about taking this...ad this...and this...and this...every second page has something you should be taking, I had to put the book away.
I guess I'll be needing to visit the library lol
Oh and I had a look at Up the Duff in the bookshop the other day, it's awful!

I've got a couple of books from last time, but I haven't got them out yet :o
I am also having an elective CS so I'm not concerned about reading about the birth. I'd like to read up on the first few weeks after bubs is born though, as that is the hardest time and takes the most adjustment. Last time around I was too busy to read anything after bubs was born!
