View Full Version : Preventing Caesarean

Someone just sent me this video on caesarean prevention made by a midwifery student.

It has voiceover from women who have had both a vaginal and a caesarean birth. It's light on but it's really effective at covering the main issues in just a few minutes.

Posting for educational purposes...not to offend anyone who has had a caesarean that they needed...so please no offence ok.

Also a good resource for doulas and midwives to use as a brief overview of some of the main contributors to unnecessary c/sections.

Anything in there about staying HOME?? :D

I usually don't watch the utube stuff, 'cos I am on dialup and it takes a year to load..

 Doesn't mention homebirth specifically (mainstream target audience!) but it does say "Choose a place to birth with low caesarean rates" - with a forest scene in the background...ain't getting no caesarean in the forest

Ah yes, the nature birth, always a great choice! ;)

I found that the video was very bias. I think the midwife student obviously has a bias towards natural birth that's clear and fine. However luckily not all women have C sections that end badly or make them feel bad. Some do and thats a shame.

It is important that we start referring to Caesarean as SURGERY. I always refer to it as Birth Surgery. It can be prevented if you question the dr as to why it is needed in the first place.

Get smart and start trusting your bodies!

Biased how? I thought it was pretty factual. And god, I would hope that any midwife coming near me would have a bias towards natural birth ;)

When I gave birth I knew how to avoid a C section, unfortunately some things are out of our controll, I really hope some people don't watch it and think all C sections are like that, because they are not- some are very empowering, and the majority- just like most vaginal births have a great result at the end.:)
If some would like to know or don't know info that helps avoid a C section then by all means post that info. I myself found this to be a very scary video that isn't representative of most C sections.

I don't think it was biased at all, it was very factual and a lot of the complications they mentioned are pretty common.

Even though i had a great C/S i can relate to a lot of things the woman describes, Gosh it is scary and it is so much harder to recover from too.

That was a great video, very to the point, factual and very easy to understand. I hope it can help prevent future un-necessary C/S

If it wern't biased it would have contained other images about homebirths or vaginal births not just the lovey dovey ones after all has happened.
I saw graphic pictures of c sections - none of vaginal births- I didn't see any stats on home/natural birth either. Only stats on C sections. That is how I came to the conclusion it was bias.

Because the subject of the video was preventing a caesarean.

It wasn't "preventing a caesarean...and here's all the other ways to give to birth while we're here".

It was about caesarean. That's why it only contained information and imagery related to caesarean birth.

It has nothing to do with any of those.

This is about caesarians. Simple.

About preventing c/s so giving the facts, risks about it nothing more nothing less.

Why would they include homebirths and VB in it? It was a video about un-necessary C/S's.

If they were to make a video about the cons of homebirths and VB's they would be very boring and short videos

I do just get tired of the fight against C sections - because I myself see alot of them as needed and wanted, and not as bad as the video makes out for most people. That is my opinion. I am glad to be able to voice my opinion- just as I'm sure you are glad to be able to voice yours?
If I post something on the negative of homebirths or the positives of C sections feel free to come on in and post away- I would never deny anyone that, as I understand we are all coming from somewhere different.

they did include natural/ homebirth pics and they were painted as all rosy. So yeah - that is why it is biased- if it is just about CS why the natural slant?

I see many positives in C/S's, i had a very positive one myself actually, but there are also a lot of cons too, and this video is expressing these in a very simple mannered way so that people can understand it.

Just further on that point, the voice over is from mothers who have done both.

I would think that mothers who've experienced both caesarean birth and vaginal birth would be the least biased of all. There's nothing like having a foot straddled either side of the fence to even up your perspective ;)

SSP - I see that you are a very pro-choice woman which is a fantastic thing. However, you do come across very defensive when ever c/sect resources are presented and I'm just [genuinely] curious as to why? All this YouTube presents are the facts on the risks of c/sects. I'm just really confused about why you feel so strongly against the risks of c/sect being shown?

I allready stated that I am happy for the risks of C sections to be shown- in a non biased balanced way- also showing the risks of all births so that the mother can make a truelly informed decision. There is nothing wrong with that.
I am just concerned about the source of this information and the reason it was put together (a bias reason IMO) and I do not believe I am defensive - just glad to be able to balance things a little bit. It seems when I do have an opinion other people become defensive though- and I'm not sure why?
I also know alot of people who have had one vaginal (or more) birth and C section births- some preffered a C section others did not.
As I said before if women want tips on how to avoid a C section thats great - this video seems more about scaring the pants off people- I don't need that because a poltergeist allready stole my socks.:)
