Couple charged for circumcising five girls

Police in Norway have arrested a Gambian-born man and charged him and his wife with subjecting five of their six daughters to genital mutilation, officials said.

The practice, also known as female circumcision, is outlawed in Norway and arouses horror among many people in the West but is a rite of passage for young women in many countries, predominantly in Africa.

The youngest of the five mutilated girls, all born in Norway, is five years old, police officials said.

The others are aged seven, 10, 13 and 14 and live in Gambia, national broadcaster NRK reported.

Police officer Hanne Kristin Rohde, head of the violent crime and vice section of the Oslo police, said on Norwegian commercial television TV 2 that the father — a naturalised Norwegian citizen along with his wife — was taken into custody on Friday.

"Norwegian police have charged this couple of Gambian background for breaking the Norwegian law on genital mutilation — five of their six daughters are circumcised," Rohde said.

The mother is pregnant with a seventh child and was deemed unfit to be held in jail.

Norwegian authorities have been cracking down on the practice since mid-2007, barring families from travelling abroad if they suspect they plan to have the procedure done outside the country.

The charges are based on the discovery by child protection authorities that the couple's second youngest daughter, age five, was circumcised, Rohde said. Their youngest, age three, has not been subjected to the procedure, NRK said.

The child protection authorities have taken custody of the two youngest girls, Rohde said, adding that the police would now seek to bring the other four back to Norway in cooperation with the parents and Gambian and other Norwegian authorities.

UN agencies say an estimated 100 to 140 million women and girls worldwide have undergone genital mutilation, whose proponents say it promotes chastity before marriage and fidelity afterwards by reducing female sexual desire. Around 3 million a year are believed to be subjected to it.

Just wondering, why isnt male circumcision considered the same/just as bad?

it is pretty horrible though

I was wondering that I am non-circ as it never entered my thought process to circ - ie I though it unnecessary and gave it no further thought People circ girls for a belief reason and religious reason and I don't quite see any difference (allowing for medical reasons).

That was my first thought too, if they were boys then it would have ok and normal and this would have torn the forum members apart with those who agree and those who disagree. But since it's girls it's not ok. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it is ok, but I don't think it's ok at all.

This will bring up the same old argument; it’s ok for one sex and not the other.

Circumcision is a shocking procedure to perform on any baby, child, or person no matter what sex they are. So, the little girls are taken away by child protection but you do the same procedure to a boy and it’s OK. :shame:

Female circumcision is far more intrusive and worse them male circumcision, often not done under hygenic conditions, and often the procedure, has terrible complications (not unlike male sic though). I agree all circumcisions should be banned, unlless for a male, all other medical avenues have been exhausted and it is medically necessary. It is awful that people put their children through what tantamounts as a vilolation of human rights IMO.

:iagree:

I don't think male and female circumcision are the "same" nor are they done for the same reasons but I am definitely not for either one.

Those poor girls.

KatyeO - yes, I definitely think we will all stand united on this one. It's wrong!!

OUCH

Did he do it himself?? Thats just irresponsible if he did. What abut infection etc....
How on Earth do you even circumcise a girl?

There's different types of female genital mutilation (FGM).

There's a beautiful book called "Desert Flower" by Waris Dirie that delves into it. She escaped her family due to FGM and child marriage etc.

GRrrrr... That is DISGUSTING

I am so against male circumcisoin, but there is no way that male circ is as bad as female circ. Men can go on to enjoy sex in their life- yes, some have complications, but majority dont and still have happy and satisfying sex lives.

Depending on the type of circumcision, women will never have an orgasm. Not to mention WHY it is done, often for the sake of the males pleasure and to keep her "pure." There are a lot of moral reasons that female circ is done that isnt relevant to male circ.

I am against both, but u cant say they are the same

It's a cultural thing.

I did my university thesis on female genital mutilation and sadly it is still far to common, recent statistics claim that in Egypt around 97% of girls are circumcised. So to me sadly this story is not unusual, but still very alarming. I hope that this can open some western eyes to a practice that is so common and yet so ignored.

Just thought Id answer this from what I know, the main difference is when a male is circumcised it is skin which is removed from the penis, when a female is circumcised (though it is done differently in different cultures) most commonly the clitorous is removed & (sorry TMI) the whole exteriour of the vagina & then the vaginal opening is sewn almost completely shut. This is therefore a lot more invasive and a much more detailed 'procedure' than that of removing skin (male circumcision) and the fact that the clitorous has a huge number of nerves in it opposed to the skin removed in male circumsicion its assumed that female circumcision would be A LOT more painful.

*sigh*

And yet male circumcision is considered fine and normal
When will society take responsibility and learn that female AND male circumcision is wrong :hair:
