Hi all-

I eed some advice and i thought who better than all the knowledgeable bubhub mums..

Ok so the story goes,,,

DD has had raging temps since yesterday morning- 39+ so took her off to the dr's today at 5. Dr listened to her chest, checked her ears, throat ect.. said her throat was quite red maybe tonsilitus- then listened to her heart. Said she was concerned cause Imy's heart was going almost 2x what it should be?????

She seemed quite worried and said that i need to take imy back tomorrow- after she has been on the antibiotics for 24hrs- to see if that has helped to reduce the heartrate!

I am confused and worried- why would a throat infection cause heart rate to increase--- can anyone help me with this- i am so worried to leave her alone as i type this she is sleeping next to me in her rocker!

Should i be this worried or is the heartrate thing quite common in sick bubs????

I'm not sure what it is supposed to be for a bub but have you checked it yourself since you got home?? Bub could have been quite anxious after being poked and prodded by the doctor, especially as she is not feeling well. You could try calling the childrens hospital, they should be able to give you some advice over the phone. Sorr, I am not much help.......:hugs: to you and bubba - hope you have a peaceful night.

Thanx for your reply jembelina-

Her heartbeat does feel fast even as she is sleeping- but then again i don't normally feel her chest while she is sleeping so maybe i just think it is fast IYKWIM.

This parenting stuff should come with a manual lol.

I know when she was in hospital with broncilitus at 5 weeks they mentioned that her heart beat was erratic- but it settled down after 5 days- maybe she just has an "overactive" heart to go with her "overactive" personality..

Maybe i am just "overreacting"-- bloody first time mums-- he he:ecomcity: !

Thanks again for your imput- its nice to know there are people around when i'm stressing to keep me sane!

I googled for you and found this website....http://www.childrenheartinstitute.org/educate/hartbeat/beathome.htm

It says that the normal heartbeat for 6 months is 100 beats per min and for toddler it is 70-80b/m. Hope this helps a little.

Also, I was told ds had a 'flow murmur' once when he had an ear infection adn was told to it is quite common when they are sick and just to get it checked again when he was well. Which I did and it was fine.
Happy Easter!

I'm sorry to hear that Imogen is unwell.

Everyone's heartrate increases with a fever and infection. It is part of the body's natural defence mechanism. If her temp was up when she was in the Dr's, it was probably part of the reason why her heart was racing. A child of that age usually has a heart rate of around 110 beats per minute to about 120 beats per minute but of course this is just an estimate and differs slightly for all children. It is probably a good idea to check her normal resting heart rate for your self when she is well and calm so next time she is unwell you know if her heart rate is increased.

I don't think you are being an overreactive first time mum. I think you sound like an intuitive Mum who knew when her daughter was unwell and acted on it promptly. I hope the antibiotics kick in and she is feeling better soon.

Thankyou all for your replys! Well Imy's temps have stablised- now not going over 38..Yay- what a difference antibiotics make (i take back any nasty comment i ever made about dr's just handing them out willy nilly:p )

Her heart rate is still very high- so we are back into the dr's on tues to have it checked again as she will then be 72hs on antibiotics and any infection would be almost clear! So:fingerscrossed: her heartrate has dropped by then!

The dr said not to worry- that it is all just precautionary and that she was sorry she didn't explain herself thoroughly yesterday! But... in future if i am worried or confused AT ALL to question her, or call the after hours number!

She also said that all you bubhub mummies are exceptionally smart- and to thankyou from her for easing my mind (even if i did still sit up for most of the night listening to Imy breathe lol)

So again to all of you- thankyou from the bottom of my heart- it is so nice to have people in here who keep my mind straight- and not rushing off hypothosisng major dieseases my daughter may have (bloody google:rolleyes: )

Will let you know how it all goes over the next few days!

(will let you all go now i've finished my:ecomcity: ing)

Hi caitsmum,

Imy has recovered beautifully from the infection- unfortunately her heart rate is still too high for a bub her age. So we are waiting one more week- so then she will have done a full course of antibiotics thus ruling out any other infections. If her heart beat is still high we pop up to the hospital for them to monitor it for awhile, and see if we can figure out what is going on.

The dr seemed happier with the drop at our last visit so that is good sign!

Will keep you all updated but i am definatley not as stressed about it now- as i was the other night.
