Hello,

I'm new to these boards and due in September, but definitely want to use MCN's. I've been reading about them for quite a while and so I think I know I want to use pocket fitted nappies as I think (apart from aio's) they'll be the easiest to use (no extra covers or long time drying etc).

From these boards I have sorted of gathered that the best ones to get are

Green Kids and Bum Genius 3.0

I've bought a Haute one off a website and it looks great, so would be interested in people who've used them and also the best nappy for night time use after the initial newborn stage...

I've found it hard to decide on which nappy because I don't as yet have a bub to trial them out, so would rather go by what other people are doing to get my initial 24 nappies! I just want a good MCN that hopefully won't leak, is easy to clean and wash and doesn't take forever to dry, or has any unpleasant smells (which I hear bamboo does?)

Cheers and sorry for long post!

I have found BumGenius are great

Baby Beehinds AIO with an extra microfibre insert also make a great day nappy (last a few hours if you're going shopping etc) and with the new pocket design, make sit easier to stick in another single layer insert or 2.

For longer day sleeps, I use the MandyMac with the Polyester liner (keeps it dry against his skin), or without the Polyester liner, but an extra microfleece liner in the top layer to draw mosture away, and I use an extra trifold bamboo booster with both these. Usually still dry-ish on the outside when he wakes.

I also sometimes use the BBH bamboo or hemp nappies for day sleeps, but also have to use a trifold booster and microfibre insert and he still usually wets through in the 2 or so hours he wears it for...

Greenkids I found too bulky for my bub - just couldn't use them...

Peapods leaked everywhere until about the 10th wash - and they have quite a low rise, so as I have a really long skinny bub, they didn't last long size wise...

But yet to find a night nappy that works...

baby beehinds all in ones dont take that long to dry and can be stuffed as well for extra absorbancy..good buy work well.. i like them..i have a few in my stash

personally id use terry town flats to begin with with a newborn and when he/she is about 6 month id buy some MCN..as they will last longer in a fit that way.

yay bella on your choice to use mcns!

Before you go and get 24 of the same nappy, I would recommend a few of each brand in case you don't like them, because what some people like, others hate!

In terms of pockets, I have Hautes, BGs, Peapods, Happy Heiny and Greenkids, and I like the inserts that come with the Haute coz i used them in the nb stage, though this was the original, not the new breathable one. And the Hautes and BG and GKs are all OSFM which is great. But I"m not using them at the moment because I have peapods and heiny prints which are sized and i am trying to get my money's worth out of them, but I did use those 3 in the NB stage when the sized ones didnt' fit yet.

I too would advise getting a few of each of your preferences. Then going from there. Also some one size fits most nappies are a bit odd on newborns so don't sell off your nappies too quick if they are a bit illfitting as they can fit much better around the 6kg + mark.

I used bum genius and loved them and wound up preferring pocket nappies over all in ones (never bothered with fitteds and covers but used flats and covers a lot)

Thanks for that girls. I think I'm definitely going to stick with pockets as I am a bit lazy to deal with covers and such like. So will use pockets with a liner. I'm going to get a few of BBH, GK, Krap Katchers for evening and a couple of Haute, and won't buy any cheap ones ever again!

Is it sad to feel quite excited about getting them? he he Hope I stick to it, as I have a lot of friends who tell me I'll go to disposables but having used non-disposable sanitary towels for a while I don't think I'll be too hassled by the washing of nappies...

I was excited getting nappies and looking at them while bubs wasn't here yet. I think you'll find everyone here loves fluffy mail!

I had lots of friends who told me I wouldn't last 3 days but here I am almost 4 months later and it's no hassles!

Ignore your friends - mine were the same, but now I am addicted, and it's rubbed off to a few of my other prevbiousyl sceptical friends.

In fact - you'll find you become obsessed with finding that next great nappy, or the one that works even better than those you have or heck even ones that look cuter than the ones you have.

I reckon in the (very near) future, there will be the need for MCN Support groups so you can get up in front of a room and resite "Hi I'm such & Such and I have a problem"

MCN Anonymous...They really hook you in.

And heck - truly it isn't any more washing - my friends that use disposables wash bubs clothes every one or 2 days - we are actually preserving the environment even more by ensuring we have full loads when we do the washing!!! (See my addiction is so bad, I even have a range of reasons making MCN's even more worth while, other than money savings and landfill...so sad...)

Can I ask why you don't want AIO's?
I find my Itti Bitti D'Lishs the best and quickest drying nappy in my stash (I also have BG's)

I think I'll get a few AIO's but its just what I've read from other posts that they take a bit longer to dry and I thought I'd probably get them when bub is past the newborn stage. I'm limited on funds so only want to get around 30 nappies, but will hopefully get a few AIO's to see how they are.

or has any unpleasant smells (which I hear bamboo does?):[/FONT]

where did you hear that?

Hemp STINKS!!!

especially in the mornings

bamboo has never had a small in it as long as we've been usingit but the hemp ones are long gone now cause 1 they didnt last to long absorbency wise, and 2 they stank far to much.

Everyone told me I'd be back in disposables... now over a year later I think they've given up that idea.

I started with fitteds, and then moved to pockets. I love pockets and I also really like AI2's.

I love Haute pockets, and I would recommend Bum Genius... but a year on all my elastic needs replacing.. (need to do that one day when I'm not so lazy).. but my Hautes are still kicking strong.

I also love Green Kids.. and love their inserts for any nappy.

I recommend trying to get a hold of some Krap Katchers for night time,... and then stuffing them with Green Kids inserts. (I use a 2 bamboo inserts and a microfibre cleaning cloth folded in thirds) never had a night leak in those.

And my bubs wets through a sposie in 2 hours..... never had a leak like that in cloth.. except when I or DH has forgotten to change him (which happens sometimes when he falls asleep and we've been busy running after O and J.)
