View Full Version : Pap Smear results - scared of changes
About 4 or 5 years ago I had an abnormal pap smear (HPV/CIN1), I was sent to the gyno, had the biopsy etc and after 3 years of 6 monthly smears I went to every year.
I saw the gyno the other day, we're TTC#2 and I was due for a smear so he did the lot, said he'd see me in 6 months if I wasn't pregnant by then.
Two days ago I got letter in the mail saying I have to go in this week (Fri morn) to have biopsy etc. I managed to get to speak with a nurse who says it came back CIN2.
I'm really scared that this will mean I have to go in to hospital for treatment (I'd opt for any option that could be done at the clinic), wondering if this could make it harder to concieve and whether we should stop trying etc. If you are pregnant do they still treat it or do they wait until after the birth? Just how bad is CIN2?
:eek:Stressing out bigtime:eek:

:hugs: I know what a very scary time this is :hugs:
I'm not sure about treating during pregnancy, but I can tell you that I've had laser treatment for CIN3 twice, both as day procedures without even being in hospital. CIN3 is the next stage beyond CIN2. Treatment options vary depending on where on the cervix the cell changes are occuring, mine were easy to treat with the laser.
Usually CIN2 or CIN3 has no implications for TTC, except that you may want to defer until after treatment. I conceived my DD after my 2nd laser treatment, and carried her to term with no complications.

I had CIN2 from the time I was 15 until just after I gave birth to my youngest daughter.
I conceived all three kids whilst I had those changes.
I never had treatment for it - just regular 6 month smears until it returned to normal.
(I would assume they would treat it these days, rather than waiting to see if it returns to normal)
Thanks ladies,
I like the sound of both outcomes!! I read they can burn it off like they do with skin cancers at the GPs but usually with CIN1 (wish I'd been offered that - would've had that done.)
I don't O until after Friday so I'll see if we can continue then.
I also read (and hoping this is true) that the biopsy has to confirm the CIN2, but it could come back as CIN1 -fingers crossed- and the biopsy is more accurate so hopefully it won't be as bad as I'm fearing. If it's CIN1 I'll ask for it to be treated before it does get worse - this has scared the s?it out of me!!! Appaarently when the gyno has a looksee with the vinegar etc he'll be able to say if it's more a 1 or 2 even before the biopsy comes back.
I cried all morning. Prayed. Hyperventillated, had a panic attack, couldn't eat, got stuck into a book and that passed the time until DD was out of school and needed her mum (*****y day at school - puberty, gotta hate it).
Jolea1 i am currently going through the same thing, waiting for a biopsy as i got results last week which said high grade squamus abnormalities... does anyone know what that means??
My mum had a hysterectomy at 28 which is what is freaking me out..... although i know that was 20 odd years ago

high grade squamus abnormalities... does anyone know what that means??
squamus abnormalities just means they found changes to cells on the cervix. High grade describes how advanced the cell changes were, and could be anything from CIN2 or CIN3 up. CIN3 is the highest grade of 'pre-cancer' cell changes and is not cancer. It's easily treated.
Jolea1, I hope you get good news from the exam & biopsy. CIN1 and CIN2 may just be monitored without needing to be treated, as Amberlea said. My first episode of this I was monitored for over a year before they decided it needed treatment.
Thanks for the support - I'll report in tomorrow arvo with whatever news I have then.
Still stressing big time, but keep telling myself it's not cancer - funny how I don't seem to be listening to myself at the moment! I think it's because I've had three close friends go down this road in their early 20s, one had radiology, one was meant to have radio but had two kids instead and ended up having a hysto after the last birth and the other one has just come out of hospital covered in burn marks from the laser - I have to remember they're not me!!

covered in burn marks from the laser? Do you mean on her skin? I can't figure out how that could happen?
She has a line across her bum that has needed dressing each day. She was under a GA when it was done and they did the cervix and closer out (not sure why she needed it further out?) Reckon she's just been unlucky.
I'm home and it's all over with. I think all my prayers were answered as the Dr was all for treatment (surgery) until he got to looking and doing the biopsy and somehow believes it has gone backwards since he did the smear 4 weeks ago and believes I'm back in the CIN1 area. WOO-HOO. He also gave us the green light to try again this cycle so looks like the BD will be a priority for the weekend. I am SOOO relieved, and so thankful.
