I have to go for an internal scan so they are going to be down there. Shave, wax, trim, manicured? I down want to look like a tart but, I don't want to be a mess. What is appropriate?

I'm a registered nurse and i can assure you that the medical staff won't notice or even care what hair you have got down there as long as it's clean! We don't stand around and discuss patients pubic hair in our dinner breaks, we do have lives  !!
A common worry but I second 3already being an RN as well:)
When I had the internal u/s they had me covered with a sheet...passed me the probe under the sheet to insert myself (it only needs to go in a cm or two) then they took over control of it, I was completely covered by the sheet the whole time.. Hard to explain...but they definately saw nothing ....and it was quite dark in the room anyhow.
I know brazilins are more common now days, but when I was working as a midwife (10yr ago) it was MORE noticable when people came in in labour fully shaved then full of hair. I can't say I ever noticed how HAIRY someone was, as a midwife you're too busy concentrating on what you're examining for. Like I say, it was only when someone came in fully shaved, that I can remember ever even thinking about their "grooming" ( I would think, poor thing must of thought we were going to shave her...gee thats gonna itch growing back) But in this day and age midwives would be more used to that too, so probably dont even notice..
Now if you shape it like a love heart, dye it green and have "I love Irishmen" tattooed on the region... They might talk about it in the tea room:laughing:

I recall a midwife friend of mine mentioning that the only time someone's personal grooming was even noticed was when a woman arrived in labour with perfectly painted toenails. They only stood out because by then, she usually sees a lot of hairy legs & unkempt feet. My friend was trying to work out how she'd got down there to do her nails
Unless you have multiple piercings & dreadlock your pubic hair or something, they've probably seen it all & I wouldn't worry about it

:iagree::iagree:
i felt a similair way to how you do... and in the end i just thought... these people do this sort of thing all time!

Clean is important and that you relax as much as possible, your body and your nerves so that they can do their work and you can appreciate what you are going to see on your scan.
You will be fine :) They do put a sheet over you and the room is darkened so they would have to look pretty closely to see details like hair. Do what you feel you would be most comfortable with.

I don't think they will even notice. I had one a couple of weeks ago and seriously she wouls have looked for about two seconds adn as someone else said it was dark and there was a sheet. She also asked if I wanted to insert teh wand myself, which if I had have she wouldn't have looked at all. Just go with however you feel comfortable!
Try not to stress. I had to have a couple of internals at the start of this pregnancy. The ob was down there for no more than a couple of seconds. Once the wand thing was in, he just focused on the screen. I had a sheet over me too.

kylie - it's doubtful that it will be an internal scan at that stage as they should be able to register a heartbeat with a normal ultrasound.
When I've had internal ultrasound, they've never even looked down there! just ask me to stick it in myself. the room's so dark and unless they specifically went out of their way to look then they wouldn't see.

Kylie...depends a wee bit on the person doing the scan, whether or not they can see anything & probably whether or not you do a scan with a full bladder.
With #1, I had a scan at 6 1/2 weeks with a full bladder & they were able to see bubs without doing an internal (although I seem to recall they ended up doing one anyway for some reason...can't remember - it was 12 years ago now).
With #2 & this bubs (had the scan at 8 weeks), they were both internals because my ob was doing it (rather than a radiologist) & they were on empty bladders (in fact, my ob never even suggested going in with a full bladder...which is fine by me because I hate having to do that). As it was, he had a bit of trouble finding bubs first but that was because my uterus isn't behaving.
If in doubt, just phone whoever is doing it & ask them. They'll be able to advise if it's an internal or external scan.

Have to agree with the others, they don't notice and TBH, once we are in labour and having a bub, you won't care who sees what!!

I got my DH to do my "personal grooming" and toenails before I had my DS

Well before I even got round to get things tidy for my scan I had another major bleed and was once again rushed to the hospital. At first they did an external scan and stupid me thought that was it! Then it was an internal scan, then a full internal physical exam. So she was down there fo about 10 minutes. So in the end I wasn't prepared so, the question and all of your helpfull advice was in vain. She did actually mention that things were a bit wild down there just because these days most of the women come in with brazilians. At first it made me very uncomfortable and I think she realised but it soon became a joke and the tension eased. Everything is ok by the way! :bfp: I think I will keep it very well manicured from now on since all my visits seem to be emergencies :hissy: and I don't have time to prepare. Thank you for all your advice, at the time it did help to get some other input.

OMG you're brave! I'd be far too embarrassed lol
I was lucky, I never got that big, everyone thought I was having a tiny baby but he was 8 pound 3! :D So I did all my tidying up myself lol thank goodness, I think DH would have passed out if I'd asked him! :o:laughing:
trouble is everything ok?
Good to her the pubes thing wasn't too embarrassing. :D

Seriously, a bit of a messy bush down there isn't going to worry anyone.
I had to have an internal once when I had my period....yes....nice huh? I mean if the technicians and drs have to do internals when its that time of the month, I hardly think seeing the varieties of manicured lawns out there is really going to interest them or repluse them in anyway.

Really??!!! I sort of find that a wee bit hard to believe...my poor ob/gyn...lol. Maybe I should take to mine with the weed whacker, then :devil6:
Actually, I just found this enlightening article: http://tinyurl.com/5rdgkj I can honestly say I have never had trouble sitting down because I don't have a Brazilian

i've been getting a brazillian wax every month for over a year now.
had my last one a week ago...which as always hurt like hell...apparently, according to my lovely waxer, the pain gets worse
i have no intention of not getting a monthly brazillian...unless of course ingrown situation gets out of control.

This is so funny - my mum and I had this exact conversation a few weeks ago.... I'd bought a pregnancy magazine so I could 'catch up' with things, and in it, there was an article that said, when you're bigger, you won't be able to do your brazillian yourself, you'll need to go to a professional. Just like that, like it's something absolutely EVERY woman does. And it got me thinking, am I the only one that doesn't?? I was horrified to think that mine, would be the only hair the poor midwives have seen in the last 5 years..... But, I didn't feel I could start now, as being the mum of 3 DD, who quite regularly need to ask me something while I'm in the shower, I thought they would wonder what on earth had happened.. So to make a long story longer, you ladies have made me feel so much better about my 'hairy situation'..... No, I won't be booking in to have a wax....

That's just plain rude. We place a lot of trust in these people to be respectful towards us and our bodies. I would have been uncomfortable too, not to mention rather cross. :shame:
I'm glad you and your bubs are fine though!
