View Full Version : Kidney problems picked up on ultrasound?
Hey all.....
Feeling a bit down this morning about our 20 week scan last night....found out that our baby has kidneys that are too big.....I can't remember what he said now but something like the capacity was bigger than they like to see.
They want me to have another scan at 30 weeks and then one done on the baby when he is 6 weeks.
Has anyone else had kidney issues picked up during pregnancy and what does it mean. I am normally one to ask heaps of questions and get informed but I wasn't too worried about it last night as I know ultrasounds can pick up all kinds of things tat turn out to be nothing. I guess I will find out more when I go to the hospital next week.
Never had a single health issue with any of the others so this has taken me by surprise.

 Hi Chic,
Its Danni from our due thread. Sorry to hear that the news wasnt all good at the scan yesterday. I was waitng to hear how you went. I dont know if you read the thread a couple of wks back when i had my 20wk scan but they found some probs with my bub too (single umbilical artery & cysts, both makers for Tri 18). :hugs::hugs: I know how bumed it makes you feel too here the Docs say they found something.
Well as for the kidneys.......My bub doesnt have probs with them but i did. Mine was not picked up in the womb but..........as ultrasound wasnt so great in 1984 but mine were too big when born. Mine where cause by my kidney function not being that great and fluid had built up in them in the womb. When i was born i was healthy but my kidneys were struggling a bit. All that this cause was Jaundice (I turned yellow) for 4 days that meant a stay in the incy crib under the purple lights and close obs by the doctors. Mine corrected themselves after a couple of days and i was fine to go home.........stories from mum & dad.
The only repercussions i had in the first yr of my life were I was more likely to get urine infections (fixed up with antibiotics each time) which i did get quite a few mum has said but apart from that i am fine. To this day i have never had any kidney problems.
I hope that helps you alittle and try not to stress. Easier said then done i know but keep happy for bub.

Not during an ultrasound, but when Luka was around a day old he had an ultrasound, or an x-ray, I don't remember which, but they wanted to check his kidneys... lol, I don't remember why either, apparently there were a plethora of things wrong with my baby that turned out to be a plethora of nothing at all.
So no, I don't know... but you are right, they do say all sorts of things during ultrasounds and they turn out to be nothing at all... or boys instead of girls :).
I'm sure your little bump is just perfect, and if not, well there's perfection in not being quite perfect anyway.

Thanks for sharing about your kidneys! SOmetimes I guess we automatically think the worst whereas there are a myriad of issues that are not serious and easily fixed.
:hugs: to you.

DS had what they called slightly enlarged kidneys at the 20week u/s (that was the official term they used on the report- can't remember what they said to me)
When I went and discussed with the Ob at the hospy not long after he said sometimes the sonographers can be a bit over cautious and that usually it's ok in the next u/s. SO I hope this is the case for you too. btw it was all ok in the next u/s and was nice to have the extra check up on him. IYKWIM
Good luck will keep you in my thoughts that it all goes ok.

Thanks Ali:hugs: All these tests make us worry more sometimes hey? They have their place definately, but, yeah, you know:)
Thankyou Ains!:flowerz:

Thanks SM! I guess maybe it is a common thing? I am glad all is perfect with your bub now. That's what I thought immediately about this little one, ahhh, everything will be fine at the next ultrasound:)

Its not hard to miss posts in that thread of ours the girls go flat out some days and your post ends up 4-5 pages back before you know it!!
Yes....I have another scan at 28wks so another 6wks from today. They say the cysts should have disappeared by that scan and apparantly are quite common in completely healthy babies. Their main concern was bub also had the single umbilical artery which makes with the cysts him more suseptable to Edwards syndrome (awful syndrome that causes death not long after birth). As you said but i think we freak more about the info doctors give us then there is actually likely to be present or cause major issues with bub. I know you have too just like i did but try NOT to google. Its just plain scary.
Docs have said to me based on my bloods at the 12wks saying bub has a 1:11139 chance of Edwards that its unlikely the cysts and cord are it......more simply just a coincedence. Bub would show more signs like club feet and heart defects as well if edwards was present.
Sorry to ramble in your thread but it just goes to show that bub is more likely fine and just the original prankstar in my case!!!
The news does rock you but!! Your a big believe in faith like me as far as i can remember ffstar. So do just that. As my dad said to me............"you will be amazed at the difference positive thinking makes in pregnancy"
Good luck......i'm sure our princes will be fine.
Danni
Aww:hugs: Ramble away! I am soory I missed your original post....you are right though, I cant keep up with that thread! Same as the SAHM one lol....
I have read about Edwards syndrome, you must have been worried, but like you said, there would be more markers:yes:
Good luck with your next scan too....I am sure too that both our princes will be perfect:) You are right about the positive thinking and faith:flowerz:

Hi Ffrench star, I have been told from my 20wk U/S as well that both of my baby's kidneys are enlarged :rain: To make it more upsetting at my following app with my ob he didn't even inform me of what they had found, I read it myself on the report when I got home (!!!!) and made my own investigations to find out what they were talking about. When I asked him about it at the next app, he knew about it and said I needed a follow up scan at 32wks, I was furious I wasn't told from the start  And of course on top of that sooo worried about what was wrong with my baby as DS was perfectly healthy.
So looks like we are in the same boat ...... my ob has said there is a blockage of some sort in the kidneys and we will need to wait on the results of the next scan to see if they have got any larger & what we will need to do.
He explained depending on what they see, I may need to be induced early, bubs may need surgery after birth or it may just correct itself in time after he is born, perhaps with some precautionary anti-biotics. I have done a bit of reading myself on it seems as though he was very 'blase' about it all, it is really dissapointing.
This has taken me by suprise too just like with you, i've tried not to worry too much but it's hard, knowing something isn't right, so I know exactly how you are feeling.
How long until your next scan?? Mine will be in about 4.5wks so I will let you know how I go once I get the results. My :fingerscrossed: for you. :hugs:

I think its very common for things to be picked up noawadays because the u/s are too good iykwim even my midwives agreed with me.
Yes this is a good thing but also a bad thing because it can send any pg woman into a panic attack over nothing !
With Boof it was picked up he had extra fluid on the brain & it was all into freak out mode because it could have meant various things. I had to have a number of follow up scans to make sure all was ok.
Then with Squeak he had cysts on his brain so this too was monitored *sigh*
I now cant wait for a HB where im not forced to have as many u/s that get me all into a tizz over nothing !
Will be praying that its ' just one of those things ' :hugs:

At the 20 week ultrasound with my 3rd son they discovered he had a dilated renal pelvis - I still don't understand what it is, but was told that it can lead to wee coming back up instead of flowing the one way.
When he was born, he was put on antibiotics as a precaution (which gave him mouth thrush and me breast thrush - but that is another story)
He had an ultrasound when he was 4 days old at the Royal Children's Hospital, and the dilation size had lessened. The paediatrician said that this does happen a lot, and 9 times out of 10 it heals itself.
My son didn't need any follow up treatment, and the problem has healed itself.
If you think of questions, write them down and take them with you to your next antenatal appointment...
While your situation is different, the obstetricians can be monitoring you and after your child is born they will receive the best medical reviews and care, It is very daunting facing this worry while bubs is still inutero. I know how worried you must be....
Ask questions - and be educated about it.
I wish you :fingerscrossed: and love, and :hugs: for you and your family

Hi there,
When i was pregnant with DS14 i was told after ultrasound that there was 'something' wrong with his kidneys and that he would need a scan as soon as he was born to find out how ''bad'' it was. Needless to say after weeks of worrying myself sick he had the scan and there was nothing wrong at all. Good luck to you :)
Hi guys...
I had a 32 week growth scan on Tuesday and got the results back today during my ante-natal appointment. Apparently my unborn son also has one 'mildly' dilated kidney. I was just Googling this (I know I shouldn't !!) and it said that this condition is more prevelant in bigger babies, particularly boys... well guess what, this baby - a boy- is in the 95% percentile for size (he was scanned at 32 weeks, but is measuring at 35 weeks). He seems to fit the criteria.
I'm trying not to worry as it does seem to be quite a common thing.. but it's hard not to.
