Hi all, My PIL have always run a farm, it is in the middle of no where, if you have heard of a place called thargomindah????

The use to run cattle and sheep, but now only run minimal cattle and sheep, They have made good money in it, but due to the same circumstances that face everyone, they have made no money for the past 3 years.

My parents should be rich, as they have worked really hard and have always run a dairy, but since they deregulated milk, they are just treading water, and the one farm that once supported 4 families, now only supports 2 families.

My dad and my MIL, ( both born on the same day of the same month of the same year, dont know if that has anything to do with it,)

both are causeing rifts, so to speak, because they want us to be farmers, buy their farms, which are million dollar farms, or start up our own, just like they did, all this came about as my hubby wants to change his career.

Then on the other hand my mum, is saying, dont bother, there is no money in farming anymore, it is not what it use to be.

My DH wants to be a farmer, and im very unsure, I know I will enoy the life, as I do love it, it is ust financially, and security that it bothers me,

I dont mean to pry or be rude, but is farming like this for everyone atm??????? or are some doing ok? what is the best to farm??

Any advice at all?????

How on earth do you even start your own??
How did you get into farming??

DH and I used to be dairy farmers in South West Victoria. He was born into it and I fell into it when I moved in with him.

The first thing I would say is that if other people have even the slightest control over the business, or influence over the decisions you and your partner make, then I would defintiely think twice before going down that road.

It is hard work and with conditions being so bad environmentally it has become much more difficult.

We're not farming anymore mainly because we couldn't stand others trying to tell us what to do, but also because we saw the conditions with the environment declining over time and not improving.

Good luck with your decision making.
