My homeschooling friend who I was really worried about has finally listened to me!

I have convinced her that the risk of being unregistered was far too great a risk for her and her family to take and she is taking steps towards registration :yelclap:

She is citing not having enough money as a reason to delay it, so I am thinking of giving her the money required as the last thing I want is to see her in trouble. It's not as we have a high (or even average) income, but it is something I can do to help without putting too much strain on our family. I think it would be worse if she had to go to prison and we ended up having to look after the 6 kids she still has at home ;)

I'm so excited :smiliedance:

I didn't know there were penalties. What about unschooling?

Apparently, once your child is 6 they are supposed to be registered in some form of education or they could be judged truant and you can face a jail term the equivalent of every day that they have not been in school. It's seen as a form of child abuse whereby you are robbing your children of their right to an education.

I have a friend who hasn't sent her kids to school for the past 6 weeks and has been told to either get them back to school (she is scared her ex will kidnap them) or register for homeschooling before she gets into more trouble. She was reported to docs ...

I'm not completely sure on the law, but this is what my friends that are involved have told me ...

Hey:) That's great she is seeing thats she needs to do the right thing and lovely you want to help.

J, I only know the Qld law but you are supposed to be registered once your child is 6. There are penalties for not registering, one being they will put you on Newstart and make you look for work. I guess that's the risk unschoolers take. You can do your own curriculum it just has to be approved by the ed dept.:)

All states are different though.

Elias, thanks for sharing, I was just thinking about your friend the other day. I hope her kids can start getting a better education now:)
