Hi girls,

Can someone please enlighten me - I have been advised to get a range of tests by my doctor, in preparation to conceive. I know there is the rubella test, but what other things will he test for? Should he do all of them anyway, or are there some that I should specifically ask for?

Thanks

When I started TTC my doc sent me for a range of blood tests too - they were for all sorts of immunities and to test if I had any diseases that could affect a pregnancy,ie rubella, hep B + C, HIV/AIDS, toxoplasmosis, listeria poisoning etc etc. Also to make sure that your iron levels are okay, cause if they're not they'll have to be adjusted before you conceive.

The results of the test just let the doc know if there's anything that needs to be done ie booster vaccinations - in which case you might have to hold off TTC until they take effect - or treatments for diseases. It also helps the medicos plan your delivery and postnatal care - ie if you had HIV for example, they would be able to treat you while pregnant so that the bubs had the best chance of not catching via blood crossing the placenta, and you would be told not to breastfeed, for example.

Don't stress to much - It's just to give you and bubs the best fighting start! Nothing to be concerned about.

I can't recall exactly what I was tested for, but it is worth getting it all done just in case. I work in child care so there are always lots of bugs around. we have chickenpox at the moment and I know I have had to inform several mums who are pregnant about it. It can be dangerous for pregnant women but also preventable via immunisation. Just a thought.
