I have been using mcns for a while now (onto the second bubba in them) and recently have noticed that as soon as she wees the nappy absolutely stinks. I haven't had this happen before.

Maybe I am using too much washing liquid, or maybe not enough? They seems to only happen on the ones she hasn't worn for a while. Is a strip wash needed perhaps?

Any ideas? I use earth choice liquid, and have recently been doing a rinse, then a warm wash due to no sun around lol. I also use the canestan rinse now.

I have a sample of the eco-store powder here I might try that on the wash today...hmmm....

Is your DD teething?

I think there are some coming through?

I never had this last time she got teeth though?

Zada suggested I try bicarb in the wash, so am doing that now. I *think* I may have been using too much liquid?

Hi Donna :D

I would give the bicarb soda wash a go first and decrease the amount of washing liquid you use for a bit and see if that helps. If not do a strip wash. If that doesn't work then try increasing the amount of liquid but not too much. It's all trial and error because it could be a number of things that's causing the smell. Panadol perhaps or any other medication ?

Still hang them outside if there's no sun around and it's not raining. OR if your stash is extravagant enough hang them out in the rain for a few days. You don't need to have them in direct sunlight to achieve sanitising and bleaching, it's the UV rays that does that.

Oh and I tried the Eco-store powder the other day, it smells soooo yummy.

Hope you sort out the stinky problem soon.

Give them a hot wash with no detergent and hang them in the sun

Thanks ladies.

Its not hemp ones, but I do know that smell lol.

Thanks Lauren (and clever you knew it was me with a different user name than you are used too, lol), my stash isn't too extravagant, but enough to hang outside for a couple of days if I need too. I have them on a drying rack so will take it outside.

ohh, glad the eco-store one smells good, I forgot to pop it in this time, but I actually measured out the earth choice instead of my usual tip, and I prob was using more than I should - more than half recommended.

Hmm and medication? She has been having the brauers teething stuff but didn't think of that because she has had it before without this problem.

Thanks for all the advice, hopefully no more stinky nappies for me soon!

Bumgenius make an odour removing spray that works in times of emergency too. If DS' nappies are getting on the wiff, and I can't work out why, I use a little spray on the inserts before the wash and problem solved.

It's called Bumgenius Odor Remover and it contains water and "vegetative microbes" whatever that means.

I got it from Baby Soft Landings.

It isn't hard working out who members are Donna when there's a few minor details in sigs :p

The odour remover spray is a good idea, BUT before going ahead and using a quick fix you should try and work out what is causing the smell first off, or at least attempt to IYKWIM.

Oh I agree with that. Sometimes, I just can't work out why so I use it then.

I've been having problems with smells too, and it's driving me crazy! How the heck can you know if you're using too much washing powder or not enough??? Not me, that's for sure . One of the nappy companies should work out EXACTLY how much to use for each full load (assuming a full load is, say, 20 nappies) and make a little scoop... So all of us clueless mummies can cope!

I've actually done something a bit different to all these suggestions... I'm leaving the lid off my nappy bucket. I find that after 2 days of sitting in an enclosed bucket, they were almost festering :barf:. I also got a can of glen20 spray, and after I load the washing machine, I'll give the bucket a quick rinse with water, then spray some glen20 in. I'll let you know how it goes.

To know if you are using too much, pop them in the washing machine without adding anything and see if any suds appear. If they do then yeah you are using too much washing detergent which would be the cause of a build up and the smell.

Generally I only add half a scoop per full load and never had any build up or smelly problem in the 2 years of MCNing. Saying that though I put nappies and all other household washing (not towels) in the same load and wash them altogether once there's a full load (two loads a day) so I don't have nappies festering in a pail.

Just one more question Lauren :D, I generally wash in with clothes too, with this many kids theres nearly always a load of washing to go on! So, can I chuck the bicab in with the clothes too??

There's always a full load hey. I'm scared that if I ever miss just one day of washing it'll take me aaaages to catch up.

Yup put the bicarb in with the clothes ect.. I highly doubt it would do any harm. I usually do a bicarb wash and white vinegar rinse every few months or so just for the sake of it. I put half our stash in the machine for a bicarb/vinegar wash and do the other half of the stash a few days later. You may as well do all of the nappies separate (I mean not in with the household washing) over a couple of loads if you are having stinky ish-ewes! ;)

I have done a few, still drying though so hopefully will make a difference.

If I have a lazy day with washing, omg, I pay for it the next day  and I have one less bub than you!

Not for loooong :D

Let us know how you go with the stinky prob won't you ? Hopefully a bicarb wash is all that was needed.
