We are considering undertaking a 'calmbirth' workshop (a variant of 'hypnobirthing') before the birth of our baby, due in October. I'm keen on some feedback from anyone who has done this course, particularly what you thought of the course itself, whether it was helpful during your labour, and what stage of pregnancy did you do the course? I gather it is helpful to be able to practice the techniques for a period of time before delivery.

I'm not sure whether I'm 'suitable' for the course, as I've never been very good at relaxation techniques eg during yoga classes - mind always seems to wander off! Has anyone been in a similar position and found they were able to practice and 'train' themselves do it successfully for their delivery? I've read some other threads on hypnobirthing experiences, but it's hard to tell whether those who've found it successful have been good at these types of techniques prior to the course.

Feedback much appreciated! :flowerz:

I did it and while it was full of interesting info and I enjoyed the relaxation techniques during the sessions and pregnancy, it all flew out the window during birth. What kept me calm was my own knowledge about the safety and normality of birth, and people around me who were calm, quiet, and would sing my deep, slow birth song with me as the contractions intensified.

The best thing that prepared me for my 59 hour homebirth without a midwife was Rhea Dempsey's course in Fairfield "Embracing the Intensity" :)

I did it, loved the course and I know that it was what got me through my labour with DD2. Everytime I gave up on calmbirthing during my labour it got so much harder to deal with.
You practise every day so you'll learn how to relax. I still use the skills now somedays in every day life.
