I'm becoming confused.

Is any plastic okay? is plastic only a problem for food storage or for other things as well?

should we be avoiding plastic altogether, or are certain ones (such as recycling codes 2, 4, 5) okay to use over and over if that's what the product is designed for.

are my oodles of tupperware containers safe? they say my rock 'n' serve containers made of polycarbonate are fine, but now I'm not so sure.

:confused::confused: very confused.

hmm.. I was just looking up polycarbonate on wikipedia (okay, not ALWAYS the most trustworthy source...) but it gave a summary of some research, and my conlusions from it was the BPA (the problem in polycarbonate) can cause neurotoxicity problems and reproductive problems if children are exposed, but not for adults. Does that mean my polycarbonate microwave containers are okay for DH to use, and me while I'm not pregnant or breastfeeding, but not for DS???

Sorry sweetie I can help you but I'm very interested to read the replies as I also have oodles of Tupperware containers, you could say that I'm addicted to Tupperware

uh oh, have just discovered that my beautiful and very expensive scanpan cookware is actually teflon coated. and teflon breaks down in high heat. scanpan website actually suggests that you only cook on medium to medium high anyway because the pan retains heat so well. I wonder how I can measure the temperature of the pan while it is hot???

i think i will get rid of my silicon bakeware too. I was going to anyway, because it is just a pain in the neck because it is so flexible, but I will definitely now.
Seems the dury is out as to the safety, but I don't believe for a minute that the little silicon particles wouldn't be getting into my cakes.

Oh no

What will you replace them with sweetie?

I have some Le Creuset (http://www.lecreuset.com.au/home.cms) that I just love to bits :hugs:

well, I don't know what to do!!!

firstly, I just realised that I spelt 'jury' in a rather ridiculous manner, so I'll just correct myself there :o

I'm not sure I want to get rid of my scanpan just yet, because I paid a lot for it only a year ago, as a 'buy once buy well' purchase.

I had been considering getting another piece of cookware, so I guess now it won't be scanpan!!! I do like the look of Le Creuset, and it seems enamel is a safe thing to cook on.

As for the silicon, I don't like it anyway, so I'm quite happy to go back to my metal baking tins.

I'm wondering too, however, about all the things in plastic packaging I buy at the supermarket... surely all that single use plastic is not good!

Don't worry sweetie I'm sure I have a few spelling mistakes too :o

I have never tried out the silicon bake ware as I just did not like the look or feel to it, I like the good old metal bake ware

I do kept a lot of the single use plastic to freeze soup etc in as I was thinking it's better to reused then recycle!

that's what I think to, try to reuse when you can. It's probably alright to use it once again - but don't put it in the microwave!

I never put it in the microwave who know what happens to the plastic and what it does to the food :barf:

:) Just want to revive this thread with a question...

My Mum uses Glad Wrap to cover dishes in the microwave, often with the wrap even touching the food. I know that this isn't good to do, and never do it myself, but doesn't anyone know of any research that show's that it's not good to do? My Mum's argument for it is that the Glad Wrap box says it's ok to do

Meanwhile, she's also the same woman that said that herbal remedies are ok to take in whatever quantities that you want, as they're natural, and it won't do you any harm... ;)
