View Full Version : Wesley or Mater - partner facilities
Hi everyone
Might sounds a bit strange, but I am wondering which of the above is better for the husband. ie.can they sleep in the room with me, do they get meals etc at these hospitals. (private cover).

At the Mater as long as you get a double room then your partner can sleep with you. From memory the rule is that as long as you have your own bathroom then it is okay for them to stay. But sometimes they don't have enough double rooms and not all of the singles have their own bathroom, so be prepared for them to not be able to stay for the first night or two until you get your own room. didn't happen to me but has to a friend. They can have meals with you - there is a minimal cost which gets added on to your bill for each meal that they have (about $10). My husband didn't eat with me as he didn't want to have dinner at 5pm! Instead he would go and get takeaway and bring it back at around 7pm and smell up the room with Thai spices etc!

Hi Anna
Your hubby can stay with you at the Wesley, although he's on a foldout bed from my recollection (that's in any of the rooms). There are one or two double rooms, I got one with DD2 :D - but hubby had to stay at home with DD1, so DD2 and I had double bed to OURSELVES (I think it helped her sleep much better than the little plastic boxes). They tend to keep these for multiples or C-sections, so you'd be lucky to get one if this isn't you. Hubby can also order extra meals at the Wesley.
If you are passionate about donating cord blood this is not (at least when DD2 was born) an option at the Wesley, but they do it at the Mater.
Best wishes

I was at the Mater Private in June 2003 with our first child. My husband stayed with me every night.
The first 2 nights I had a small room with no bathroom. He was given a fold out bed and used the visitors toilets. I was then moved into a room with my own bathroom and he slept in a very comfortable recliner chair (so he says), although we could have asked for the fold out again.
In my final days, we were upgraded again, this time to a double room. My husband was in heaven because he got to sleep in a proper bed again with me. He thought we were at a hotel because the paper got slipped under the door each morning and the sheets changed!

We were at the Mater at the beginning of June and I was lucky to get an ensuite room right from the start. We were expecting that my husband would be able to stay with me, but when we got into the room there was only a single bed. Apparently the rooms with single beds are supposed to have a recliner for dads, but some of them were away beign repaired. We were all prepared for Simon to have to go home again, but luckily they found someone whose husband had gone home and who didn't need her recliner, so he was able to stay. He was also able to have meals with me. They will even let extra visitors buy meals if they have enough food left over at the end.
Best to be prepared that dad might not be able to stay. My husband also spent 2 nights at home in the middle because he thought the recliner to too uncomfortable. And if the double beds are the same as the singles, they're pretty uncomfortable too.
